Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting amber head. Aromas of dark fruit, molasses and a bit vinous. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of spices, molasses, and some fruitiness with a smooth, lingering sweet finish.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry & GregClow at Le Select Bistro -- aged approx. 5 years. Pours a lightly cloudy dark red-ruby with a small diminishing off-white head. Not that much sediment considering the age of the bottle. Complex aroma of fruit, caramel, wine, grain, raisin and much more. Smells wonderful. Very nice, surprisingly smooth, flavour of plum, raisins, spices, caramel and alcohol. This ages extremely well -- I look forward to trying a newer bottle to compare.

Bottle. Large fizzy tan head that was mostly lasting, fine-small sized bubbles, lacing was sparse, cloudy, carbonation, and a brown hue. Nose was malty, caramel, sweet, and alcohol. Flavor was sweet, malty, caramel, vinuous, and somewhat dry. Mouthfeel was dry, tingly and vinuous. Medium-full body. An outstanding BSA, very enjoyable and quaffable and the alcohol was not overdone IMO. Scrumptious! If you like this beer style, find it, buy it and enjoy every taste of it!

Picked this up at a 6 pack shop in PA in a 750 for $5.50 (which I thought was a good price since the place I got it from tends to be pricey). The caramel really came through in the aroma on this one. My brother in law had a Chimay Grand Reserve when I had this one and they were very similar in appearance. The Chimay was a little smoother. The Ommegang had a bit more fizz to it yet overall you could tell they were going for a similar thing. 7-4-7-4-17 Re-rate: Pours a red amber with an average tan lacing head. Aroma was vineous, caramel and dark fruits. Flavors of the same, slightly bitter.

Poured a rusty brown with a generous and light tan head. The initial aroma was sour. Very sour. Almost as if the bottle could have been bad. We let it sit for a while and boy did it mellow out. Strong aroma of fruit with apples clearly dominant. Definite floral aroma and taste as well with a splash of chocolate or cocoa. Finishes well but does leave the fruit taste on the tongue. Not as good as I remember the first time I had it. Hope they haven't changed the recipe.

Rerate Description, still the same, just not quite as wide-eyed about it as before - the absolute best $4.99 750 ml beer out there though! Mouthfeel not quite as thick. Original 4.6 Absolutely delicious - flavorfest going on here. Sweet raisiny aroma, dark orange cloudy appearance with bits of sediment. Thick creamy off-white head with good lacing. Sweet malty flavor with hints of dates and raisins - excellent mouthfeel - feels velvety. Alcohol hidden very well. A definite winner!

12 oz bottle. Clear orange-brown color with thin off white head. Complex aroma. Suprising mix of molasses, anise, nutmeg, and raisins. Malty, slightly sweet, and effervescent with a touch of alcohol. Excellent beer.
