Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Thanks Chuck! I helped sample this sub $4 beer. It has a thick bubbly tan head that doesn’t disapate atop a dark brown/mahogany body that is rapidly bubbling like champagne. I wished more beer looked like this. The aroma is a bit light. Hints of light toasted malts and lightly acedic (perhaps this is licorice). Dates are hiding under there. The flavor is of toasted malts, a little caskiness, some really ripe bananas. The flavor lingers. Medium bodied beer with a huge carbonation. This carbonation kinda kills the flavor. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood for this beer or we got a bad bottle? I thought the aroma just wasn’t there.

Sweet malt aroma, caramel and vanilla. Light almond-cherry notes. Cloudy medium brown-amber with thin tan head. Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Starts with medium malty character, vanilla, oak. Cherry-almond notes, smooth sweetness, light alcohol. Mild sweet oaky finish. Nice light nutty after.

Sweet aroma of licorice. Burgundy body color with a big tan head. Head settled to a small one on top of beer. A rich sweet flavor to it that was good on the palate. A good beer.

Brown and fantastic. Spicy, alcoholish, but fine in smell and appearance. I’ma big fan of this guy. Who knew Yankees could make Belgian better than most Belgians, and at less cost?

Sweet caramelly nose, lush dark brown color and a big tan rocky head. Fat, sweet malt body with tastes of sweet caramel, syrup and dark fruits (figs). Also a toasted graininess in the middle. Maybe some toffee and chocolate? Pretty thick stuff and a damn good balance. A little fresh and rough around the edges, but I liked that.

Dark burgundy colour with a very minimal tan head. Smells of pit fruit, plentiful malt, a hint of metal and sweet caramel are all noticeable in the aroma. Medium-bodied; Carbonated mouthful, weak taste. Flavours in the taste are malt, dark pit fruits, chocolate and a very astringent alcoholic kick. Aftertaste very bittered from the malt and from the chocolate flavours and the alcohol is still noticeable very late on. Overall, a decent beer, but really not as good as everyone makes it out to be (in my own opinion of course). Worth trying, because it is a great deal-sub $4 for a 75 cL bottle! I bought this 75 cL bottle at Wegman's in Pittsford, New York.

750 ml bottle at Le Select Bistro - shared with blankboy and HogTownHarry. Somewhere around 6 years old according to our server. Pours a dark, murky burgundy colour with lots of little floaties and not much head. Aroma of rich wine/port and fermented cherries. Body is initally fizzy, but softens quickly, and rolls over the tongue very nicely. Flavour starts with a muted caramel sweetness, followed by notes of tart fruit, and a hint of roasted coffee in the finish. Alcohol is really well hidden. Develops a musty, ash-like quality as it warms up. Could be a bit past its prime, but still pretty nice stuff. I’d love to try a younger bottle for comparison.

750 ml bottle obtained in a trade I think with Beeryum - Mine was cave aged in Howe Caverns according to the tag. Not sure how much that helped but it was pretty good. Poured dark copper with a big fluffy tan head that stayed pretty well. Aromas of caramel, candi sugar, yeast, and raisins. Flavor is caramel sweetness, earthy yeasty notes, raisins, plums, roasted malts, and sweet candi sugars. Palate is smooth and creamy but oh so sticky sweet. Delicious stuff.
