Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

750 ml bottle obtained in a trade I think with Beeryum - Mine was cave aged in Howe Caverns according to the tag. Not sure how much that helped but it was pretty good. Poured dark copper with a big fluffy tan head that stayed pretty well. Aromas of caramel, candi sugar, yeast, and raisins. Flavor is caramel sweetness, earthy yeasty notes, raisins, plums, roasted malts, and sweet candi sugars. Palate is smooth and creamy but oh so sticky sweet. Delicious stuff.

Get out two glasses for this one and make sure you get some of the yeast on the bottom of the bottle in both of them, it adds a lot to the beer. Reminds me of red wine.

12 oz bottle, liberated from BCTC VIP dinner. Pours a clear ruby hued brown body with a creamy light brown head, nice retention. Nice figgy and fruity nose with some cherry juice, light bubblegum, yeast, and caramel. The flavor is dark fruity malts with a good bit of yeast influence. Light alcohol, lingering sweetness, and a little bit of an earthy mushroom note on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a little clinginess on the finish. Moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, pretty decent, just as good or better than Chimay or Maredsous.

12oz bottle (bonus) courtesy of RagallachMC. Thanks, Paul! Pours a cloudy brownish-red appearance, topped by a fluffy tan head; good retention and lacing. Nose is vinuous, but also smells strongly of green apples and candy sugar; overripe red-fruit sweetness. Full, chewy mouthfeel: red fruits, candy sugar, licorice (as noted), red vinuous notes, and some roasted malt character; the sweetness is really a bit much, however - like boozy raisins. The finish is much better: lengthy, balanced, with belgian sugars, wine, and spice.

2 year old bottle
Pours with a light brown head atop a hazy amber colored beer. The head is quite thick. The aroma; at first I detect raisin and a bit of rum, then I get some subdued notes of sherry. The taste is a bit spicy with some light sherry notes to it. This beer has a fairly good amount of body to it as well. The finish is slightly on the hot side, spicy. This aged example tastes meaty, this would go well with a red meat dish.

Bottle (75 cl) from Systembolaget. Hazy ruby/mahogny with a medium beige head. Fruity. earthy. spicy and fudgy with notes of clove and orange peels. Medium bodoed and smooth, good balance, ok strong belgian but nothing special.

yummie nose with alcohol, peacjes, candies sugar and yeast. Wonderful dark brown color, frothy head and a liveley carbontion. Alcohol, chocolate, marcipan, malt and raisons are rounding up the taste. Numbs your lips with a medium lasting toasted chocolate taste.
