Apr 27, 2003 yummie nose with alcohol, peacjes, candies sugar and yeast. Wonderful dark brown color, frothy head and a liveley carbontion. Alcohol, chocolate, marcipan, malt and raisons are rounding up the taste. Numbs your lips with a medium lasting toasted chocolate taste.

Jul 8, 2008 750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Reddish brown with a medium frothy head. Very fruity aroma... dates, banana, brown sugar. Anise comes through strongly in the taste, with some malty sweetness and fruitiness. Interesting, but this anise is a bit too strong for my taste.

Sep 29, 2002 I just finished painting the wood siding on the front of our house - I’m hot and tired; I reach in my fridge, what will it be for my #500? Coors light or PBR??? NOOOOO.....I decide to relax and savor this thick and vinous concoction. Caramel and sugary sweet malts, lingering alcohol and hops. As I relax and the ale warms it becomes even thicker, hints of plum, licorice and bing cherries. An hour floats by before I finish. Sublime.......

Feb 22, 2004 Hardly burgundy, a very definite brown with short tan head. Good fruity carmel nose. Complex flavor of carmel, whiskey, and winey astringent finish

Jun 2, 2006 Oh my gosh, Ommegang! 2 for 2 with this brewer. In fact, I liked this one as much as I liked the 3 Philosophers. Poured a dark ruby brown color with a large pillowy head (although the lacing was short lived after each sip, leaving behind a clear / clean glass). The flavor was spicey, sweet (candy sugar), malty, nutty, and banana-like. Dark fruits detectable in both the aroma and flavor. A very nice American version of a Belgian strong ale.

May 16, 2005 Bottle: Poured a burgundy lightly hazy color ale with a huge light brown head with perfect retention. Aroma is malty with traces of spices (pepper with a touch of cinnamon?). Taste is very enjoyable with a mix between some nice floral malt and some sweet dry fruit (raisin). Body is full and alcohol is well hidden. Very enjoyable and probably the best I had from Ommegang.

Nov 13, 2002 Dark, cloudy brown body with an airy, faded khaki head. The aroma is surprisingly whiskey-like. Caramel and toffee ride over a light burn of alcohol. The carbonation is cottony but not too much so. There’s a very faint acidity underneath the malt.
