Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Aroma was unexpectedly subdued. Malt, cherries and other dark fruits. Dark red/brown color. Beautiful cramy, three finger thick head. Cherry in the fore...ever so slightly sour...I think it definitely needs to be served 55+ because the flavors are too subdued just out of the fridge. Finish is desert dry. Has a nice flavor progession, but lacks flavor intensity and range.

(12 oz. bottle) Pours a dark, rich red with a thick tan head. Very strong aroma is dominated by fermented bananas. Pretty remarkable flavor: tangy sugars, banana, toffee, and vinous characteristics blend with warming alcohol tones. Pair this with a Harvey's Elizabethan Ale for a decadent night of tasting.

A dense lasting tan head over a burgund colored body. Pleasant and complex aromas. Belgo-yeast and a range of inviting fruits; mainly sweet apples, plums and berries. Whiffs of caramel and flowers. Taste is fruity-sweet, malty, light yeasty and very well rounded. Medium to full body. Mild bitterness and warming alcohol in the finish. Excellent. (750 ml bottle @ RBNAG’07)

Nice deep burgundy color.Malty flavor, and it has a aroma of raisins. Very good and enjoyable. Its good to drink it at just below room temperature, not too cold. if too cold, you will not get the full effect.

Cork removal could have been more enthusiastic. Wow! One of the finest noses I have encountered in a beer: loud and round, bubble gum, coconut, light perfume, cedar, fruit cake, fig, ripe plum, banana, subtle phenols, cinnamon, and the spicy alcohol is uncannily resemblant of cinnamon. Pungeant as heck as it arrives at room temp. Soft feel is like liquid silk. Brisk carbonation, somewhat velvety. Licorice notes, very sweet raisiny malt, honey, fig, and plum. Adequately spicy hop finish with nice touch of dryness. Absolutely balanced to perfection. I imagine this will convert to liquid bread within a few years when the malt really gets a chance to show its stuff. Acidity and slightly watery palate are the only weakness here. Otherwise a world classic.

Hats off to the gang in Cooperstown for really understanding how to make Belgian ales. Ommegang really captures that abbey ale essence. It compares nicely to Chimay red. It has all the soft ale-fruit taste, like hints of apple and banana, with a nice moderate hoppiness, and cloudy brown color. Its a little harsher than the great Chimay red, though, but I can’t complain.
