| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 9, 2003 Slightly cloudy amber color,no head what so ever.Aroma is malty sweet, fruity,a slight wine like aroma that seems to peek through, raisin and plum as well.Sweet malty flavor with a caramel tone to it the fruit in the aroma doesn't seem to make much of an appearance in the flavor, with the acception of the raisin that comes through loud and clear. The alcohol seems to be well pronounced through out this brew not real hard core but it's there in the beginning and definately at the finish, along with a faint sweet raisin.I can't say this is a favorite or that i want another one of these but it's not bad but i think i prefer there 3 philosophers better.still it's a nice brew and would recommend that it be tried at least once. It looked fine and the aroma was nice as well but the taste was odd. Maybe I had an odd bottle, but this one tasted too yeasty that hits the throat poorly. I will try another bottle and see if its any better. rating 2.5
Eric-rerate-The bottle Keith got must have been bad/poorly stored or something. What i got here was a classic belgian strong ale (leaning towards a quad in some cases). pours a murky brown with a smooth tan head that lasted the entire time the beer was out. Funky aroma of brett, brown sugar, berries, and dark fruits. Lots of flavors going on here-brett, brown sugar, other spices, roast, belgian yeast-very complex. This beer has the complexity of a quad but the body of a dubbel. Keith, WTF!? This beer is truely amazing since its available just about anywhere in the country. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA

But it was still fantastic stuff. Aromas of brown sugar, molassas, and fruit. Flavors were very sweet with sugar cane and more maltiness like caramel. Very tasty stuff. phishpond417 (1953), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 11, 2008 Wicked tastey brew. Pours a deep dark brown colour with a full sized head. fairly sweet and heavily carbonated. Prevalent nutty character, milk chocolate, caramel, and raisin on the palate. Aroma is fruity, ginger-bread cookies, cinnamon and brown sugar on the nose. BillKismet (1947), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 4, 2003 Poured a gorgeous incarnadine-ruby color, but the brown head was too foamy. Gentle evergreen forest aroma with a slight banana towards the end and a noxious ether presence in the middles. The beer washes over the mouth, drowning it in alchohol that numbs the tongue and teeth like an anesthetic even though the abv is listed as only 8.5%. Banana asserts itself towards the end. scraff (1946), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Good complexities in the nose with notes of golden raisin, plum, and musty caramel, with lighter notes of chocolate, cherry and spruce. Rich flavors up front with rum raisin, plum, and caramel leading the way. Balance comes around nicely late with a decent bittering hop addition. Full bodied, moderate carbonation, fruity, bittersweet finish. A top notch American style abbey ale. A great price point on their brews certainly doesn’t hurt either...

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 24, 2004 Deep, murky mahogany. Nose deeply sweet, plums, sugars, port, and grapes. Flavor is nicely sweet, some molasses and plums, lots of candy sugar. Hints of nuts and mild roasty bitterness, pleasingly fluity and rich, lovely kiss of chocolate at the end. Full and chewy, nice mouthfeel. Definitely a beer that has to be sipped at the proper temperature, sampled too cold it has a bit of an astringent bitterness, but at the proper temp it’s just lovely.
