Pours a very rich brown, a beautiful beer to look at. Sweet, malty, notes of spice, caramel and brown sugar. This bottle was actually brewed in Belgium, Moorgat I’m assuming, but i will admit i do think the American version is a little more complex, both are excellent though! | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 6, 2006 12 oz bottle. Dark garnet brown with a smooth, dirty-tan, custard head. Settles to a skin. Strong banana; mango, cereal, toffee and currants. Smells good enough to drink. Starts bitter with a good fizzy mouthfeel then smooths. Just the slightest sweetness behind some lime. Dry celery aftertaste. KyotoLefty (1471), Kyoto, Japan

Medium to dark brown with lots of red in it and a nice head that slowly turned into lace and remained throughout. Strong aroma of dark malts, chocolate, raisins, cherries, cookies, yeast. Very rich and complex. Flavor of dark malt, very rich and malty, with cherries, raisins, chocolate. Sweet but very well balanced and very complex. An excellent beer, as good as the best dubbels in Belgium.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 7, 2003 25.4 oz. corked bottle. Deep, dark red with large white head that disappeared rather quickly. A complex mix of fruity and sweet esters and flavors such as vanilla, caramel, and raisins. Alcohol is present but in just the right amount, not overwhelming, warms you slightly. Excellent beer and even better value at $3.99 for the bottle. I'll find this beer in the strangest of places and get it every time. SamGamgee (1467), Santa Cruz (La Selva), California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Oct 6, 2009 75cl bottle. Dark brown-red with some sediment and a thick, creamy beige head. Creamy pureed dried fruit, banana, and spiced sugar cookie aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet up from with caramel and dried fruit, and gets dry and alcoholic in the finish while remaining smooth. The mouthfeel is luxurious and soft, but with lots of carbonation. Pretty light on the tongue as well. While the yeast is relatively subtle, it provides a very nice profile for the beer overall. I know it’s been said a thousand times at this point (possibly literally), but this is a great dubbel that is very authentic for an American-made beer, even if the brewery is Belgian-owned.
