Nose of mulled wine, christmas spices, red apples with cinnamon. A woody bitterness, followed by an odd fruit lipstick taste. Black licorice, plum skin, tannins. Dry texture with a sweet, false aftereffect. Unadventurous and rather a bore. AgentSteve (1379), SF Bay Area, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 1, 2008 Opaque deep ruddy brown pour with a layer of a tan head that lingers and leaves a veil all the way down the glass as it recedes. Really a beautiful thing. The nose is dried fruits, some sugars and a hint of funk. The flavor has those influences that blend nicely, with the addition of cocoa like a chocolate covered cherry and a touch of licorice. Very enjoyable. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA

Very nice aroma is full of fruits like cherry and raisins with only a hint of alcohol. Taste is fruity as well but with a sweet honey flavor and a hint of cherry and citrus. Really a fantastic beer that I can see myself picking up often. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Rich malty fruit coming out of the Westy glass as I pour.
Taste is minerally belgian spice, dark fruit, honey sweetness, stale yeast.
Really good beer. This brewery does Belgian beer well. LaChad (1375), San Francisco, California, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2002 RE-RATE: No change to ratings, still a damn good beer. I love the complexity of fruit! A bit more of a nectarine-peach flavor this time, perhaps. Outstanding for an American-Belgian beer, the best I’ve had from this country...why don’t some of the hard-hitting micros (Stone, Rogue, etc.) do Belgians? HTOD Rose is nice but not as good as Ommegang.
ORIGINAL RATING: Very nice looking in my Chimay glass, and I liked the bottle - the label on the back was laid out like a sports page stat table in USA Today. Deep amber color, nice looking head. Very floral bouquet with some citrus, and the I thought that the flavor was right up there with the world’s finest in terms of complexity - I could just about feel it shifting flavors from instant to instant. I got honey, bananas, oranges, caramel, chocolate, perhaps even a bit of pineapple. A classic! igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Sep 23, 2007 Had this beer on 4/29/2007. Aroma is a sweet rich malt scent with caramel tones. Color is a deep purple amber with low carbonation but a nice tight head. Taste is light and sweet. Starting with a full/medium body it goes down with a crisp bubbly feel and a roasted sweetness coming on. Finish pulls from the sweet malt flavor with a nice fruity and yet spicy flavor that must come from the yeast and ends with a mellow bitterness. This is one of the best Belgium brews I have had and is far better then I was expecting. ilovedarkbeer (1367), Dallas, Texas, USA
