Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Poured deep cherry like a nice wood door.HUGE Head.Smelled Fruity almsot port like. Strong Alcohol presence here. But also felt the fizzy in my nasal septum. I kind of liked it. It has a sweet mouth fell and I know the alcohol will come out as it warms. I have seem wine ratings, and then I saw that this had a 96, kind of high. WOW, really strong %.

The cork finished bottle is a nice presentation for this belgian-esque beer, Someone must have been kind of rough with my bottle though. Cork shot out with a huge "pop!" and then foamed all over me, the carpet, et cetera. Once that excitement was over and I got some into the glass, it was a deep ruby/brown, with lots of tan head that seems to start out fairly course and settle into a nice fine skim. Aromas of brown sugar, molasses, figs, banana. Tawny port-like palate, and much chewier than I expect for a belgian-style ale. The sugar additions are rather evident. Quite sweet toffee flavors. Is that diacetyl? Something there reminds me a bit of Samuel Smith’s buttery taste. This is quite an interesting and distinctive beer for the money, and I admire the enthusiasm of the Ommegang folks for making traditional Belgian styles in the US. To my tastes however, this particular beer was kind of rough. Much more residual sweetness than I like, becoming cloying after just half a glass and covering up any flavor subtleties. A year or two of aging might fix that, and I plan give that a try.

Pours a brownish amber with a big fluffy head. Aroma of dried fruits, bananas, alcohol, malt, brown sugar, and yeast. Taste is similar, fruits, malt, brown sugar. It’s a little lighter in taste than i expected, but still excellent.

Bottle(75cl) Clear deep red/amber colour, with a nice creamy head. Aroma was citrus, choclate, caramel, metalic, yeasty, fruity and has rasin. Flavor was almost the same, smouth creamy mouth feeling. Medium body, and medium rasin/fruity finish. Nice

Deep red in color wih a bid frothy head. Sweet, fruity, spicy aroma with cocoa, caramel, fig, plum. Big punch of flavors, spicy and carbonated, with cola, cocoa, caramel, a bit of licorice. This one pulls a trick, feeling big bodied but remaining dry. Nice.
