Fruity, spicy aroma with lots of fresh baked bread and caramel. Flavor was malty, bready goodness with dried fruits, caramel and pepper. While I doubt cave aging had anything to do with it, this beer was marvelous. The fact that it was a couple of years old probably made a big difference. I’ve had this a few times in the past but for some reason never rated it. I don’t remember it being nearly this good however. Maybe I should go and buy a bunch to sit on for a couple of years. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 5, 2008 Bottle. Dark copper pour with generous pillowy off-white head. Very sweet smell- malt, caramel, burnt sugar, cotton candy, and dates. A hint of sour wood on the nose, and also sometimes metallic notes. I swear this beer alternated between a few different distinct smells every third time I sniffed it, and occasionally the smell hit me as unpleasant. Similar on the palate. Sometimes it hit right, but sometimes it just felt too sweet or metallic. Haven’t had a double in awhile, and I know they’re not typically very yeasty, but I just kept wanting something to funk it up just a bit. A very nice beer, though.
