One of the finest noses I have encountered in a beer: loud and round, bubble gum, coconut, light perfume, cedar, fruit cake, fig, ripe plum, banana, subtle phenols, cinnamon, and the spicy alcohol is uncannily resemblant of cinnamon. Pungeant as heck as it arrives at room temp. Soft feel is like liquid silk. Brisk carbonation, somewhat velvety. Licorice notes, very sweet raisiny malt, honey, fig, and plum. Adequately spicy hop finish with nice touch of dryness. Absolutely balanced to perfection. I imagine this will convert to liquid bread within a few years when the malt really gets a chance to show its stuff. Acidity and slightly watery palate are the only weakness here. Otherwise a world classic. ultraspank (866), Dublin, Ohio, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 2/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 27, 2003 Had one of these last weekend. Had been saving it from my trip to Indy a month or so ago. Turns out I instinctively saved the best for last. Pours a dark cloudy walnut with maple highlights. The average fizzy rose/tan head is fully diminishing with no lacing. The awesome nose is as close to perfect as I have yet to sample. The cornucopia of aromas includes (but is not limited to) caramel, brown sugar, fruit, anise, pepper, chianti, cola nuts, and vanilla. I regret that I only had one bottle, and didn't have about 8 hours or so to just whif on this bad boy, because I'm sure that I could come up with an infinite number of subtleties in the nose. The balanced flavor is according to my notes "as deep as a pacific chasm - there's a party in my mouth and everyone's invited". The full body is velvety and dry. The only flaw in the palate is a slight amount of cloying quality at the finish. This brew is not a pretender. I would put this on par with Westy 12 and Rochefort 10. This must be what angel piss tastes like. uhorpheus (215), houston, Texas, USA

Fro some reason its Amercan originlowered my expectations, but it was great stuff. Heavily spiced, almost a citrus tang to it like a wheat beer. A little on the thin side, but otherwise very nice. Mouthfeel not quite as thick. Original 4.6 Absolutely delicious - flavorfest going on here. Sweet raisiny aroma, dark orange cloudy appearance with bits of sediment. Thick creamy off-white head with good lacing. Sweet malty flavor with hints of dates and raisins - excellent mouthfeel - feels velvety. Alcohol hidden very well. A definite winner! mkobes (2104), paramus, New Jersey, USA

Its good to drink it at just below room temperature, not too cold. if too cold, you will not get the full effect. hoorayforbeer (105), Denton, Texas, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 30, 2007 I think this is the best beer I have ever had that I can purchase absolutely anywhere I shop for beer. As many times as I have walked by this, I only tried it today, and boy am I glad I did. I have a new standard beer. A really rich and darkish Belgian with a very complex-but-soft flavor. I can taste roasted fig (?!), caramel, red grapes and only comfortable bitterness. A very ethereal and vaporous quality makes this like a darker meade -- truly beautiful.
