Nose is sweet and fruity, with notes of brown sugar and dark fruits (cherries perhaps?) that culminate to form a very complex aroma. Appearance is not quite a red shade of burgundy with a very fluffy and fragrant off-white head. Taste has a lot of the aromas described above, with some honey. Slight carbonation with thick, full mouthfeel. Reminds me very much of most the barley wines I’ve had. Really quite delicious. hoptimus (50), Grand Island, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 19, 2008 750 ml. bottle. Poured into a trappist glass. Rich mahogany pour, beige head that didn’t last too long. Aroma is fruity/sweet and floral. A bit of sugar up front, raisins, plum, some citrus but not too hoppy-very nice balance. Medium body, a bit fizzy. Despite the ABV and style, I found the alcohol character to be burried. Very good beer. campmonster (9), USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 27, 2008 Dark and musky. Looks can be deceiving to the tongue. A great start, peak, and finish. Deep aroma and subtle vapors. TheGent (160), , Massachusetts, USA

Light skin of foam on top (I followed the pouring directions on the bottle). Aroma musty like Venice, with cherry and grape wine overtones. Taste comes on sweet and full, like a cold egg cream, then fades out with a heat that is both winelike and whiskeylike. Delicious woody aftertaste, just bitter enough to balance out the sweetness. I can see how that lingering bitterness might make this a 2nd or 3rd tier Belgian, rather than 1st, but I’m pretty happy with this beer, especially at the pricepoint. Will definitely throw this guy into the rotation for a bit. WhatNewinBooze (15), Centennial, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 11, 2009 I broke this beer out at a barbecue the other day to show one of my neighbors what real beer is, needless to say he put down his Miller Lite and wanted to drink my entire bottle. Brewery Ommegang was started in 1997 in a traditional Belgium style farmhouse located four miles south of Cooperstown, New York. Demand became so overwhelming that in 2003 Brewery Ommegang was sold to the Belgium brewery responsible for Duvel Golden Ale and now Ommegang brews are made both in Belgium and Cooperstown. This particular brew is made in Belgium is the first beer produced by Ommegang and was inspired by the ales produced by the Belgium Trappist monks. This beer pours nicely into a dark red brown color with a nice fat foamy head. The aromas are full of Belgium yeast as well as some fruity and nutty notes. The palate is full and robust with breadiness that dissipates to fruitiness as you reach the exquisite finish. coldmeat23 (233), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 12, 2009 Good dark amber color liquid. Medium sized head which dissipates rapidly to a light film. Minimal lacing.
Big, sweet, malty nose. Nice caramel notes. Sweet, dark fruits. Brown sugar caramalized bananas. Very slight alcohol smell.
Complex flavors, as well. Booze soaked dark cherries. Toasted malts. Pineapple, pear, and bananas. Slight fig and clove flavors.
Very nice and creamy in the mouth, as it should be, for the style.
Very tasty and highly drinkable brew.

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Nov 17, 2009 A beautiful deep dark burgundy beer. The head is enormous and long lasting. The aroma is spice, licorice, maybe some cloves and vanilla. The first thing that struck me was the mouthfeel, velvetty and smooth. The flavor is layered it starts with a dark malt then some fruit plum-like notes. But it keeps going, there is more to explore below that. Caramel and toffee notes come out along with a touch of chocolate. I wish I had saved this to share with friends, this beer is an experience. On the other hand, having the whole bottle to myself seems like the only way to properly discover the wonderful properties of this beer.
