It has a plethora of tastes that can only be described as vegetable with a taste that supplements the alcohol content which is just right in this beer. The aftertaste is equally as impressive. Fantastic overall. Schooly (2), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA does not count | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jan 27, 2005 Delicious. Good size brownish red head that even tastes great. Once you get to the dark amber liquid though, it’s a real treat. Taste of cherries was most prominent for me, but not overpowering. I did note the chocolate and caramel too. I got two of these in my beerswap, and will be buying an entire case very soon. 2philosophers (16), Ridgewood, New York, USA

It’s a deep red with a nice thick head. I’ve aged this beer in my apartment before, and its usual flavor intensified then, but this takes it to another level entirely. The cave-aged version has a perfumey aroma and a much richer, fruitier flavor. It’s quite strongly alcoholic and very satisfying. Goes very well with chocolate. Thoroughly enjoyed this. All of Brewery Ommegang’s beers are brewed with spices, and Ommegang contains spices including coriander, star anise, and even the rare African spice grains of paradise. The brewery likes to call this a burgundian beer, as it shares many traits of burgundy wine, and works exceptionally well with red meats, game, cheeses, and a number of dishes you would match a good burgundy wine with.
Ommegang pours to a beautiful, bright, burgundy red color with a thick and creamy white head, and a good bit of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very impressive with lots of aromas of chocolate, malt, estery aromas of fruit, yeast, and peppery alcohol. The palate on this beer is complex and layered with lots of good sweet malt and chocolate flavors, plummy fruit, and hints of toffee and raisin. Ommegang finishes with more of those complex and delicious malt and fruit flavors up front, then ends with some good yeasty and peppery alcohol flavors that linger.
This is a complex, delicious, very well done example of an Abbey Dubble, from an outstanding NY brewery. At 8.5% abv, Ommegang is the type of beer to share and relax with. As stated, it is an excellent beer to pair with a number of dishes, ranging from a cheese course, to meats, to a rich desert. Marketed in 750ml caged and corked bottles and 12 oz 4 pack bottles, Ommegang is well worth seeking out in markets where it is sold. If you ever find yourself in and around Cooperstown, NY, a tour of this beautiful country brewery is well worth the time and effort to find. alexkeil (20), New York, USA

Aroma reminiscent of sugary fruit and toffee. The sweet aroma does not disappoint as the taste brings forward a nice caramel note with a great malt sweetness. Finishes crisp with a slightly bitter note, but overall an excellent mouthfeel and predinner compliment to cheese, or (as I had it) a beautiful compliment to chocolate cake! lemasney (398), Trenton, New Jersey, USA

| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Apr 18, 2008 An excellent abbey ale from an outstanding brewery. It pours a dark burgundy color with a thick white head. The body is dark and hazy, full of wonderful flavor and aromas. The aroma is filled with caramel malts, fruit and spice, as well as an alcohol kick in the nose. The palate is full and the alcohol has a nice warming quality to it. Favors of sweet caramel, dried dark cherries, prune, and yeast dance on the tongue. These favors mingle for a time and finish slowly. Ommegang is grate as it is and could be even better with cellaring.
