Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Big frothy head with Mike Jordan hangtime. Just the site of it had me drooling. A rich mahogany sunset that is almost hypnotising. I thought I was in Aruba on the beach at dusk. Has a ballanced flavor profile with slight earth and fruit. Nice dry finish. Alcohol is well hidden. A tasty ale indeed. I highly recommend.

Had this beer on 4/29/2007. Aroma is a sweet rich malt scent with caramel tones. Color is a deep purple amber with low carbonation but a nice tight head. Taste is light and sweet. Starting with a full/medium body it goes down with a crisp bubbly feel and a roasted sweetness coming on. Finish pulls from the sweet malt flavor with a nice fruity and yet spicy flavor that must come from the yeast and ends with a mellow bitterness. This is one of the best Belgium brews I have had and is far better then I was expecting.

Oh my gosh, Ommegang! 2 for 2 with this brewer. In fact, I liked this one as much as I liked the 3 Philosophers. Poured a dark ruby brown color with a large pillowy head (although the lacing was short lived after each sip, leaving behind a clear / clean glass). The flavor was spicey, sweet (candy sugar), malty, nutty, and banana-like. Dark fruits detectable in both the aroma and flavor. A very nice American version of a Belgian strong ale.

Pours very brown and beautiful. Lasting head is tannish yellow. Smells of fruit and honey. Deep caramel flavor, wow. Deep and dark. So malty. Not much hops at all, but enjoyable.

Rated 4/30/06: Mild complexity is the best way that I can try to sum up this bountiful brew. Pours a deep rich burgandy color with more than ample head that never leaves, there is considerable amounts of lacing rounding out a wonderful appearance. The aroma is a bouquet of dark fruits and spices. Plums, raisins, figs perhaps swirled around some cinnamon and cloves. Mouthfeel is slightly thinner than I was expecting but adequate. The flavor is a toned down version of the aroma, lots of intricate flavors come together to form a very appealing taste. Finish is smooth with a slight alcohol warming, nicely done.

750 ml bottle: Pours a dark brown/amber with a massive, foamy cream head. Dark malt based aroma with some fruit and dough aspects. Has a subtle hay note in the background. A bit dry and perfectly carbonated, the malt dominates the flavor. Again, the dark fruit flavors are prominent which helps accentuate the big maltiness throughout. A damn fine brew.

12oz bottle. pours hazy brown and with copious head. Intense mouth-feel; carbonation is very present, but doesn’t detract from the beer’s enjoyment. Many layers of flavor, ranging from toffee to cherries, and finishing with a not too strong alcohol presence. Personally, this is one of my favorite beers that I have tasted. I’ll be sure to pick up another, next time!

Mahogny brown hue with light brown creamy head, decent lacing, when pouren from corked bottle produces much, much head, have to pour very slowly not to overrun the cup, smells like brown sugar and dired fruits, hints of chocolate or caramel taste,, medium to full body, light carbonation, syrupy texture as it warmed the honey really out as did a bit of a spicey aftertaste, very nice Belgian Strong Ale.
