Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

The "commercial description" matches this beer perfectly. The head was dense, with some huge bubbles trapped at the base. The malt seems to go through changes right on the tongue in every sip, from light to dark. This isn’t a beer that hits you in the face saying "I’m big - respect me!" Rather it cuddles up next to you and wants to tease. The best of the excellent Ommegang lot.

Serving Type: 750ml bottle corked and caged(bottle-conditioned). Aromal: Sweet, Malty. Caramel! Strong nose. Appearance: Big foaming off-white head with itsy-bitsy bubbles. Highly carbonated with rich, dark amber color. Very sticky lacing. Flavor: Sweet yet spicy. Fruity. Tropical. Plums. Palate: Medium body. Tingles the palate. High carbonation. Overall: A sipping brew that sneaks up on you. I don’t have much more to say. Outstanding. Execellent. Superb. Great. I want more!

One of my favorite, easily accessable (at least in NY state) brews. Looks beautiful, smells wonderful, tastes rich and lovely... I always keep an eye out for this one.

If you like the abbey style ale, the winey taste of heavily fermented beers, then this is the top of the line. The caramel, the toffee, the chocolate, and the fruity taste are all well represented as soon as you take a swig. It’s an awesome ale!

Pours a very deep brownish red with a tan head. Quite a bit of lacing on the way down. Nose is extremely sweet with tones of old cherry skins. Flavor is smooth, rich, and deep. Robust malted flavors with a slight cherry tone to it. Caramel tones present as well. Feel is excellent. Perfect combination of bubble and rich, thick flavor coating your tongue. Extremely drinkable. A heavy hitter, but so rounded that you can’t help but keep going and going and going. Awesome offering from Ommegang. A Belgian styled jewel right out of America.

Ommegang... Oh, what a head. A huge, melted styrofoam, creamy head. The beer itself is the darkest shade of magenta I could imagine. Dark, but not obscure in hue. It’s really turbulent and cloudy. It’s a candidate for ’best head ever’ along with Hennepin. Head and lacing are so tenacious. The aroma is of deep grain, alcohol, grass, hay, plum, black cough drops-- all soft. It’s dank, like a basement. It has a medium to heavy body. It’s soft and syrupy with an acidic flick at the end. It lingers. The flavor is like wood with tarragon, fig, plum, fennel, tamarind and brazil nuts. It’s very complex and very boozy with an aftertaste like scotch. It actually tastes stronger than 8.5% ABV. Great beer.
