Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

25.4 oz bottle, corked. Body a dark ruby brown with a big brown head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar with some fruit. I tasted caramel, oak, and baking breads. Very nice complex flavor. Palate is smooth without being oily, medium thick. A very nice beer.

This brew pours a clear but dark brown, with a marshmallowy tan head. Aroma is strong of spicy malt and alcohol. The flavor is sweet, raisiny and brown sugar, with a drier finish. Of thee beers from this brewer, this fits right in. Definitely tasty.

12oz bottle. Aroma: Dark fruits(currants and dried figs), great caramel aroma, yeastiness, anise, slight coffee, and a nice earthiness that blends with the yeast. Appearance: Deep copper bordering on brown and just slightly hazed. Light tan head was full and looked like shaving cream. Really nice lacing. Flavor: Lots of dark fruit, caramel, and candi sugar initially. Melds into a sweet malt/bready flavor. Some cherry, vanilla, anise, and wood right before the finish. Alcohol also slips in as it finishes, but is not overpowering. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Medium carbonation. Finish was dry and pleasant. Alcohol left nice warming sensation. Overall: Tons of fruit in this one. Really well made and balanced. Terrific.

Bottle compliments of Reverend Marshall. Proper glassware probably would have accentuated the character if this fine dubbel but it was enough of a beer to overcome being consumed out of some type of squatty juice glass. Dark brown and a touch hazy. Fluffy, foamy, tanish head. I always pick up immediately on the sweet, dark fruits with dubbels and did again with this one. A nice clean, dry finish. A solid beer from Ommegang.

It pours deep reddish brown, with a lingering rough tan foam. The aroma is dominated by a rich spicy raisiny caramel, with an interplay of sweetness and roasted notes blended with elements of pear and dried dark fruits. Upon tasting, one is struck by the vigorous carbonation. As it subsides, the caramel takes center stage with the fruit and spiciness, making a gorgeous display of flavors. Toward the end, the spicy peppery element transitions into a streak of mild bitterness, leaving behind spice, caramel, and bitterness in the final notes with a licorice like association.

This seemed like an exceptional deal at $5.50 per 750ml bottle and I liked Hennepin so here I am. I poured this into a snifter but I bet a wine glass would have worked as well. The color is the darkest red I have ever seen but not quite brown. The head is a craggy rocky fortress of cream-colored bubbles. The smells are like squeezed grapes, wine, alcohol, raisins and I find myself sniffing away as I sip. The flavor is strong, some raisins, long aftertaste of licorice and a slight tinge of alcohol. I think the mouthfeel is really smooth but the beer does coat your mouth thoroughly. The alcohol starts rearing its beautiful head towards the end of the first glass and by the end of the bottle I feel like dying. I drank this while listening to the new 9th Wonder album: Dream Merchant Vol. 2, you should too. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-05-2007 16:34:26

Pours very dark ruby/amber, with hints of brown, and a thin white head. The aroma is of yeast, sweet malts, and spices (cloves, coriander). The flavor starts sweet and spicey and has some fruitiness. The middle has more yeast and more fruit - like candied pears or other soft fruit. There is some caramel and toffee sweetness from the malts. The finish is crisp and a little sweet. Overall, very nice.
