Commercial Description:
Deep burgundy color with a big, fluffy head. Complex fruit aromas with a layered sweetness (honey, then caramel, then toffee) with a hint of licorice and chocolate. A big, rich, abbey-style ale that dries out nicely on the finish.

Fruity aroma. Dark , opaque. Long lasting shaded dense head. Fruity cherry like taste. Smooth with just a slight bitter aftertaste. Medium bodied with lively carbonation which belies its appearance. A wonderful Belgian Ale brewed in the good old USA.

Head is a frothy coca-cola color, which is average size and mostly diminishing. Lacing is good, body is clear, dark raspberry/mahogany. Aroma has roasty malts, estery(citrus, banana, cherry, plum), phenol(clove), with notes of alcohol, cherry, and plum. Flavor and aroma are very complex. A medley of esters(plum, artificial cherry, lemon), malt(bread, caramel, toffee), and alcohol warming. Palate’s body is full, with a soft fizzy carbonation. This beer has a bitter finish. Overall I think this is a complex enjoyable beer, but would only appreciate it every once in a while.

Pours dark burgundy, almost opaque. The head is huge and takes a while to settle. Aroma of overripe apples and sugar. Taste is sharp at first, then mellows into sweet malts and the baked apple and honey flavors. Good enough.

A very nice inexpensive Belgian Style Brown Ale with less alcohol then its Belgian Brothers. HIghly recommended.

Love getting around to beers I’ve had quite a few times but not gotten my lazy ass to rate. Light brown w/ large head. Aroma of dark fruit and belgian yeast. Textbook taste for a dubbel. Dark fruit, light caramel sweetness and sharp belgian yeast with a slightly dry and lighly bitter finish. Love it. One of the best values around for a 750ml. Fantastic and versatile beer for pairing with food.

12 oz. bottle in pilsner glass. Pleasant light bouquet, floral and fruity aroma. Extremely attractive golden deep red. Lots of ’layered sweetness’ as described with a very fizzy belgian ale mouthfeel. A little dry on finish, a decent bitterness, overall very enjoyable.

Bottle enjoyed courtesy of Rob (Rooftoprogue). Thanks, Rob! I liked this one quite a bit. Crimson meets brown in the color, and banana and clove meet caramel on the nose. Lots of spices and delicious malt tones in the mouth. Reminded me of a barleywine to some extent. Lots of fig and date notes. Great stuff, one of my favorite Belgians in awhile.

750ml from Knightly Spirits, Orlando FL. Mahogany pour with a two finger light brown head, good retention. Ratings from combined notes of bottles produced at Ommegang and at Duvel, 04 and 05 vintages, respectively. Aroma is a little sweet, with yeast, wood, apricot, berries, prunes, caramel and chocolate. Flavor is slightly vinous with more concentrated components eluded to by the aroma. Big raspberries, dusty cocoa, prunes galore. Additions include raisin bread and distinct Belgian yeast. Palate is warm and somewhat syrupy. Finish is somewhat dry with some good bitterness forcing its way through. This is a very good strong ale, this breweries best offering, to me. Only noted differences between the two bottles were what seemed tired yeast and less hops from the Belgian originating version. Both were consumed very fresh. Good balanced beer.
