tiggmtl (4179), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 11, 2004 Sweet dark fruit in the nose - plums, raisins followed by caramel maltiness and chocolate. A touch of alcohol in there too. Deep, reddish brown colour with dense, pillowy, tan head that does not quit. Coats the sides of the glass. Gorgeous. There’s a definite sweet-sour fruit hit up front followed by huge chocolatiness and a dry spicy finish. A light hit of alcohol in the finish and definite warming sensation. Silky smooth mouthfeel and medium body. Lively bubbles in the mouth. Interesting and enjoyable. Very similar to the commercial description except I expected it to be wine-like whereas this is more like a liqueur. Bottle.
Avengedpoet (59), Mesa, Arizona, USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours a very deep maroon with voluminous head that quickly dissipates, yet never disappears entirely. Current bottle has been aged approximately 9 months since purchase, due to the over-whelming spiciness of this brew fresh. Aroma is still of heavy spice, of dark fruit, belgian funk, as well as faint cherry tartness and licorice. Taste is very deep and much more well-balanced than when fresh. The effervescent carbonation really helps to scrub the palate from the heavy dubbel taste, which makes it even more satisfying. This time around was much better than previous experiences. For people who are not fond of heavy spicing, I would definitely recommend aging it awhile to let some of that drop out. mikalooch (30), , New Jersey, USA Oct 6, 2008 Pours a deep red with thin beige head. Aroma of cherries and yeast, almost smells like a cognac. Malt and fruit to start, finishes with a flat kind of sourness which sticks around. Medium carbonation, leaves a bit of stickiness to it. Solid beer tgncc (295), Bellmore, New York, USA Oct 5, 2008 The aroam is dark fruits, yeasty, slight alcohol. Very pleasing. Very attractive amber/chestnut color as well, persistent white head. The flavor is malty, fruity sweetness, caramel. A little spicyness is thrown in as well. Strong carbonation. The finish is clean, sweetness with a some spicyness on the palate. Excellent beer. taalhiker (111), Dayton, Ohio, USA Oct 3, 2008 From bottle. Pours reddish brown with huge tan head. Aromas of yeast, honey and spice. Complex flavours of hops, spice and toffee with long finish. This bottle was cave aged. AgentSteve (831), SF Bay Area, California, USA Oct 1, 2008 Opaque deep ruddy brown pour with a layer of a tan head that lingers and leaves a veil all the way down the glass as it recedes. Really a beautiful thing. The nose is dried fruits, some sugars and a hint of funk. The flavor has those influences that blend nicely, with the addition of cocoa like a chocolate covered cherry and a touch of licorice. Very enjoyable.
