Commercial Description:
Belgian pale & pilsner malts w/ Styrian Golding for bittering and Saaz for aroma. Ginger predominates the spicing. Fermented in primary with Ommegang's house yeast, followed by secondary with Brettanomyces bruxellensis. Dry-hopped in secondary w/ a blend of hops; Tettnang being the stand-out. The flavor profile is very herbal with an earthy undertone (very fitting for a Belgian-style farmhouse ale). The dry finish and pronounced hop aromas hide the 8% abv very well. Dangerously drinkable for its strength and character.

THOUGHTS: Not as funky as I was expecting. I usually don’t look for funk in a beer, but I was kind of in the mood. A nice beer, but not great. The dry hopping is nice twist for the style. Gets more funky as it warms. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a hazy, golden yellow with a small white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was light hops, light to moderate dough and cheese yeasts, white wine along with a slight fruitiness. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter an moderately acidic; while the finish was lightly sweet and acidic, moderately to heavily bitter and sour with an average to long duration. There were white wine flavors then a lot of yeast and hops. The light to medium body was dry with fizzy carbonation and a light astringen and sort of metallic finish.

The aroma is similar to an unblended lambic very tart and and haylike and then somewhat like a tripel. It pours a very cloudy orange with a one finger white foamy head. The flavor is very bitter, at first i get lemons and oranges very citrusy finishing with a nice hop bitterness all the while being extremely tart and dry this is one funky ale right here!

It was okay until it warmed up. Then it became much better. The funk would not have been detected had I not known about it by the label. Overall it was well spiced and quite drinkable.

I’m sorry...I love Ommegang but this is not a winner. Straw color, next to no head, maybe a little lacing. Weak aroma of fruit. The flavor was that of overripe fruit (and I hate that flavor) with only a little brett (and this bottle is a year old) funkiness. Flat in the mouthfeel and just rather sickly sweet through and through. Talk about a major disappointment!

Thanks to Eric for this one. Cloudy yellow body. Aroma is funky, bretty, cheesy, and has a putrid ammonia/cat piss character. Flavor is light brett, honey, and yeast. Cool name though.

Pours a clear light golden yellow with a big even soft head, decreasing quickly enough. The nose is dry and spicy. Light wheaty malt with alcohol, spicy hops, a bit of straw. A bit yeasty, but mostly dry and alcoholic. The mouthfeel is about average. Low carbonation and not watery. The flavors are very dry and refreshing. Crisp hops, spicy, alcohol, and dry dry Brett! A bit of that pineapple-like fruit and straw. Very dry. Small hints of horseblanket, but nothing crazy, lingering driness. Leaves an astringency. This would be lovely as an every day beer for a quarter the price!

Pour is a bright orange with a large white head. Aroma is lots of funk and pine hops. It the kind of beer that fills the room with a wonderful aroma. Flavor is dry and citrus with a large hops profile and again some barnyard and yeast. A great example of the style. I had a fairly new bottle (April 08) so i can’t wait to see what happens after some age.

Batch 1, 1yr old. Pours a hazy golden color with a nice white head. Aroma of belgian yeasts, funk, citrus and a little tartness. Flavor is fruit, maybe pineapple or apricot, citrus, spices, funk from the brett, wheat. Pretty good saison, a lot going on in this one.
