Commercial Description:
Belgian pale & pilsner malts w/ Styrian Golding for bittering and Saaz for aroma. Ginger predominates the spicing. Fermented in primary with Ommegang's house yeast, followed by secondary with Brettanomyces bruxellensis. Dry-hopped in secondary w/ a blend of hops; Tettnang being the stand-out. The flavor profile is very herbal with an earthy undertone (very fitting for a Belgian-style farmhouse ale). The dry finish and pronounced hop aromas hide the 8% abv very well. Dangerously drinkable for its strength and character.

Cloudy yellow-tangerine with a halo of white suds. Fermented orange nose. Straw-like flavors with essence of dry orange. Quite solventy, yet mimosa-like. Very dry ending with nice citrus vapors...Los of solvent flavors too. Very refined and classy. Me like.

Bottle purchased from The Red in Santa Cruz. Poured into a goblet. Golden in color with a white head that quickly reduces to a thin cap. Smells of unripe green grapes, apple, brett. Tastes of grape skins, bittering hops, a bit of mellow fruitiness, a metallic note, musty brett, a dash of spice. Pretty underwhelming profile here. Carbonation is fine and prickly, body is a shade thin of medium. A bit acrid in the finish. Not Ommegang’s best.

Thanks to egajdzis for opening this. Batch #1, June of 2007. Opened right around the six month mark. Pours a lightly hazy golden with a medium bubbly white head that left some lacing. Aroma of citrus, some light barnyard, brett starting to come through, some light funkiness, still a little sweet in the nose. Flavor of Saison spiciness, horse blanket, lemon, ginger, drying out nicely.

[Bottle] Pours hazy golden with small off-white head. Aroma and taste are both quite sour and funky with some yeast. Mouthfeel is too thin. A little bitterness on the finish along with some yeast. I really did not care much for this beer. 6/3/6/2/12=2.9

Update, 05/23/08: This was the first bottle that I tried where the brett finally was showing through. Significantly better, even if it is still rather average.

The color was light golden/orange. The head was creamy, thin, and white. The aroma was wine-esque, grape, sour, alcohol, and yeast. The flavor was tart, earthy, alcohol, grape, and yeast. The palate was average. The finish was tart.

Bottled June 1 07. Consumed on January 22 08. Pours a hazy soft gold with a thick whispy white head. The aroma is slightly acidic, white grapes, very vinous, some grassy hops, some lemongrass. The flavor is fruity, a little tart, dry, some grassy notes, a bit of alcohol, slightly earthy, spicy, lemongrass. The palate is soft and full, smooth and only a little dry at the back of the mouth. The finish is nice and earthy. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

batch 1, 2007 bottle...golden yellow body with small white head (nicely laced)...aroma of yeast, lemon, earthy elements (grassy for sure)..flavor is similar and picks up some lemon skin or rind as well...pretty basic, nothing special
