Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Aroma is fruity/estery with a hint of cherries and alcohol. The flavor is about the same, with subdued cherries and a touch of astringency. My bottle was 2008, and I wish I had an older bottle to try. I will probably try to pick up another bottle of this and age it for at least a year and try it again. I in fact did age another bottle, and was disappointed. The alcohol fades, but so does the cherry significantly. The first bottle was amazing and one of my favorites, though!

750 mL bottle (2007). Pours a murky mud-brown with some reddish highlights. The high carbonation creates a medium-sized frothy beige head but quickly dissipates to nothing. Aroma is bready malts, caramel, raisins, light yeast, and a hint of cherry from the 2% kriek. Flavor of rich malts, caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits. Though somewhat lacking in the nose, I do get a quite a bit of kriek in the flavor. I don’t find it as sweet as many of the other reviewers -- perhaps because it is slightly aged? Rather light mouthfeel. A good quad.

Pours a dark amber with creamy mocha head. Left very little lacing. Aroma is alcohol, cherry and chocolate. Nice silky mouthfeel. Flavor is a bit sour with abundant cherry, plum and dark bitter chocolate with a nice bit of alcohol in the finish. Very nice beer and a bit different from other quads that I have had. I also like the Portland connection :)

Very complex brew. Pours a dark copper with a tan head. Lots of cherry on the nose. The initial taste is of cherry with generous amounts of malt in the background. Very drinkable too considering the 9.8% abv there. Solid. Definitely worth a shot if you come across it.

Bottled - dark red color with decent golden head. Smelled of chocolate, cherries and fruit. Tasted coffee (?), chocolate, cherries and an underlying spice....I liked it - it reminded me of a home-brew we made last winter that had a little too much sugar (boom!).

Big bottle. Aroma was fruity with raisin and plum. Pour was a golden brown with thin head and good lacing. Malt and plum and raisin and caramel fused with alcohol at the end. Strong presence on the palate. Many quads have a hard time balancing the high alcohol with enough other flavors to make it enjoyable. Not a problem with this one.

Pours an odd dark amber with medium off-white head, decent lacing. Couldn’t keep yeast out of pour despite 2 month sit in fridge. Aroma of tart fruit, strong toasted malt, caramel, yeast, and lots of spice. Flavor matches well, but just doesn’t come together in my opinion. Drinkable, complex, but just not my style.

Pours a hazy amber color with a substantial tan head. Aroma is of yeast, fruits, and perhaps some spices. Cherry is rather present, as would be expected, but cloves and cinnamon are also there, if in the background. A very intriguing beer.
