Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

TAP: deep brown pour, nice white head with good lacing. Cherry and banana on the nose, more of the same on taste, and a nice creamy mouthfeel. Exceptional beer.

Bottle from Green’s. Pours a deep brown with hints of red and a two-finger lingering white head. Spicy malt and cherry aroma with roasted character. A lot of flavors at play. Difficult to distinguish some of them although there is definitely cherry and some other citrus flavors, malts, a little hops and a strong twinge of yeast. Despite the taste amalgamation it is nonetheless a rather light beer. Delicious, although a bit sweet for large-scale consumption.

Never have had much of a taste for quads. Strong alcohol taste is prevalent with a slight taste of cherry to finish.

2005 bottle - I’ve had many of these over the years, but I thought this one deserved a rating. Darker brown color with a cherry-heavy aroma that features, caramel, candy, vinous fruits, and yeast. Flavor is pleasantly cherry-ish with lots of tartness, dark sugar, yeast, and some vinousness. Nice feel. Overall, a solid quad that never seems to telegraph its true strength.

(bottle from Skyview) Pours a medium, hazy, reddish brown with just a thin off-white head. Aroma is musty and filled with cherry skin right away, but the maltier scents of caramel appear along with another smell that reminds me of a barbeque sauce. There’s a constant shifting between the cherry and the malt here, and it’s a pretty pleasant effect. The taste isn’t nearly as strong of cherry as I would’ve guessed from the smell, and there’s a lot of sweet caramel in here. Some sweet cherry appears mid-palate. Only upon the beginning of the finish do I get the spike of tart cherry skin, and the finish itself imparts a taste of crushed peanuts with a bit of bread. The mouthfeel is medium, and the carbonation is a bit too spritzy for the style. This is pretty good, and it’s definitely an interesting take on a quad. Thanks Bob!

What a fantastic beer. Hints of cherries and spice in the aroma. Flavor is great balance between tart cherries, yeast, and some other hints of tart fruit. Body is very light and crisp. Alcohol is nearly undetectable. Overall, this is a great beer to sip and enjoy anytime of the year.
