Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

75 cL bottle at Svea. Pours hazy dark brown with a slowly diminishing tan head. Wineous aroma of cherry and roasted malty notes. Light metallic and mild fruity aroma. Dark fruity and wineous with a solid caramel and roasted flavour beneath. Lingering yeasty, fruity and subdued malty into the finish.

Pours a deep caramel red color with a thin off white head. The nose and flavor are full and rich with all things manly. Leather, earth, dried fruits and a touch of funk. Creamy on the palate.

(Bottle. 2007 edition). Very sweet ripe fruit aroma. Dark reddish brown body, moderate off-white head. Flavor has lots of complex fruit notes, cherries, raisins, and figs mostly. Very sweet, but not as candyish as I was fearing. Alcohol is well disguised. Good stuff, though can’t compete with Rochefort.

Thought I had already tried this beer, oh well! The beer has a nice red/orange caramel color. The beer also pours along with a nice thin layer of head. The aroma smells like sweet figs. I cannot smell the cherries, but maybe somewhere in that sweet aroma there is the cherry smell tied up. This beer packs a strong flavor. Lots of sugar, candy, and fruit flavors going around. Slight alcohol taste, but hidden well by the fruit and sugar taste. Not as creamy as the other Quadrupels that I have had, which are few. Overall, this beer packs a nice fruity punch with a nice sugar/candy taste. I probably wouldn’t drink again, but a damn good beer to try.

2006 bottle. Pours a murky brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of a sweet cherry lambic...ah, I could smell this beer all day! Flavor of sweet cherries, raisin, dark fruits, raisin bread, soda. Smooth mouthfeel. Excellent quad and probably the best of the American versions that I’ve had so far.

2008 vintage out of small bottle. Pours a very rich ruby/brown color, with very pleasing head and good retention. The aroma is somewhat faint but sweet with some candied malt. The overall taste is sweet, but there is good depth to the flavors, with some raisin and some roasted sugar flavors. I was expecting more sweet/sour cherry flavor but I am actually glad that it ended up being a background flavor, it made it more of a full beer. I liked the carbonation, it was somewhat high which made the beer a little on the thin side, especially considereing the high ABV. Very smooth for a quad, extremely drinkable. It’s worth the money for sure.

Pours a hazy dark brownish amber with a creamy two-finger head that shows very good retention and lacing. The aroma is very sweet with candy sugar and caramel malts dominating. There are generous amounts of dark fruits as well, raisins and the like. The taste is as sweet as the aroma suggests, tons of caramelized sugar, dark fruits and caramel malts. Cherries are in there as well, with a hint of sourness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lots of carbonation. It may be just a tad thin. This is a decent example of a quad despite not being extremely complex. Very drinkable.

Crushed with Jakebra. Cherries on the nose. Flavor, like burnt wood and some awesomeness. Pretty damn enjoyable. Definitely smells better than it tastes, but that smell is beautiful.
