Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Bottle. A really luscious beer that is surprisingly good. MuttyD nailed the description on this one! I have seen this beer on the shelves so many times but for some reason have never tried it until now. It is now my favorite brew from Ommegang.

Pours dark caramel with nice foamy head. Smells almost like a grape vine i.e. really vinous. But so promising. It goes down quite smooth and dry tasting like raisins. Pretty good beer.

Chestnut color, creamy frothy head. Brown sugar and dark fruit nose. Roasted malt, dark fruit, oak, nutty and molasses flavor. Smooth finish. Highly recommend this one. One of my favorites to date.

Dark brown/red with off-white head. Scent was dominated by cherry and mild roast, and flavor followed, hints of roast being overpowered by excessive sweet fruit, like synthetic cherry. There were slight metallic hints. The palate was all-star, but that’s about it. Given the rating and hype, my experience was an unsatisfying one.

75 cl corked bottle:
Pours reddish brown with medium head. Sweet marshmallow aroma with notes of cherry stones and oak. Dry oaky flavour with notes of cherries and alcohol; taste a bit like port. Drinkable but not outstanding.

Bottle - Pours a dark brown with light tan head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of cherry and chocolate. A very tasty beer with perfect carbonation and sweet malt flavor. The chocolate and mild cherry flavor really do well together. This is an outstanding beer and a good value.

Pours hazy dark amber with light tan head. Aroma of yeast with a hint of sour cherries. Initial flavor is malty and finish is sour cherries and a slight metallic taste. Medium body with lively carbonation. OK, but not one I will be seeking to have again.

The pour is a deep reddish brown, with a reasonable tannish head. The nose is true to all Belgian quads with notes of dark fruit, yeast, some malt, some nutty aromas, but all somewhat washed over by a sour cherry scent. The flavor is much like a combination of a decent quad mixed with a sour beer. While this makes for an interesting combination, the sour cherry detracts from what would otherwise be a good quad.
