Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Overall very tastey but not as memorable as some of the best beers in the style. The cherry flavor comes through and adds a hint of sourness to go with the sweet carmel flavors. The mouthfeel is smooth but i find it a bit thin.

750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. Smelled of malts. AS it warmed the aroma only grew into something malty and carmel like. I liked it as it warmed and would drink a round room temperature. Forgot to say that it had a really nice head with good lacing. I would go back here for sure.

750ml bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Not quite what I was expecting from this beer, overrated. A murky mahogany pour with a creamy beige head. Nose was a bit weak, faint cherries, Belgian yeast and booze round out the nose. Flavor was much of the same.

Nice reddish Brown color and fair head. some Cherry and chocolate hints. Very smooth.

nose is wet lightly rotting figs and sticky alcohol. appearance is barely transparent rouge. flavor is sticky melting toffee with a light and late alcohol burn. a bit fuesely...the booze really hangs out. spicy caramel is the main pronounced note. mouthfeel is really sticky and lingering and a bit obtrusive. a solid big and complex beer.

Bottle. Quick pop. Porous head. Dark red-amber. Moderate aromatic cherry notes. Big complex mouth feel and taste. Wood, cherries, alcohol and dry chocolate.

I’ve had a bottle cellaring for four months (2007 Vintage) until consumed this past weekend. An interesting blend of a Quad and Lambic. I know the label says there’s only 2% cherry lambic, but it does an amazing job of smoothing out the Quad and adding a fruity/cherry flavor to the beer. Excellent full crimson body, strong head and a fusion of yeast and malts. Ommegang has out did itself in brewing Three Philosophers.

Bottle...Pours reddish brown with a one finger, very dense head. The aroma is not as strong as some other quads, but it was pleasant with some subtle fruit and roasted malt nonetheless. Medium-bodied. Complex flavor with some caramel notes. Very warming with some alcohol present. Nice beer, but there are better quads out there.
