Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Beer pours with a huge creamy head. Color is an amber brown color. Aroma of fruit, spice, and malt. Taste is of fruit, candy, malt, and maybe a little yeast. Finish is very smooth, with no alcohol detected. Body is smooth & full.

Interesting beer. Bottle poured into Grimbergen glass. Head is decent sized and a creamy white color. Aroma has some sweet nuances and some alchohol is certainly present on the nose and on the tongue. The flavor is a bit sweet, but I wouldnt know it was cherries if I hadn’t read the bottle. A big malt flavor is really what sticks out. A big powerful beer for sure. Very good.

This beer pours with about a half inch of creamy white head. It has a deep copper color and a fruity, candy-like aroma. The flavor is amazing. I at first notice the typical Belgian ale, syrupy flavor, then I get the alcohol, and finally the tart cherry flavor rounds out the flavor. The cherry flavor does not tastes fake, which is always good. The carbonation is about medium with a medium-heavy body. This and Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout are my top two.

Color: Clear, deep burnt amber color with black tones. Thin foamy white head with no lacing. Nose: Rich and pungent nose of cherries and soft malt. Gorgeous fresh fruit notes. Palate: Heavy weight. Big chewy malt, coffee, chocolate and a touch of cherry fruit toward the finish, but overall dominated by the massive malt character.

An outstanding quadrupel that’s on par with the best beers from Belgium. It pours a dark reddish brown with a dark and cloudy body. The head builds up to a thick pale tan head that bubbles down to a thinner layer that just covers the body. An inviting aroma of sweet dark cherries, caramel, malts and alcohol leads you to the first sip. Sweet dried cherries mixes with caramel and chocolaty malts, sour cherries, plum and raisins. All of these flavors are surrounded by a warming alcohol that fades off slowly with some bitter notes into the finish. The palate is full bodied, smooth and a little sticky. Overall an extraordinary beer that only gets better and more complex with age.

From a bottle poured a dark amber color with a good amount of head. Very sweet malty flavor with a lasting finish.

750 ml bottle. Aroma and flavor are both full of banana-y esters and a touch of alcohol. Very smooth, really tasty.

Locally this is available in grocery and liquor stores but all samples are bad. Some have hardly any head and all have heavy molasses taste and aroma. Supposed to have cherry lambic, but none discernible. Look me up when in my area and I can make something out of molasses, carbonated water, alcohol and a cherry pit for a lot less money.
