Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Aroma of fruits soaked in wine. Darker fruit on the palate with a nice zing. Raisins and cherries and port. A full bodied presence. Very good American brew.

Reddish brownish, fluffy had that dissipates. Nose is tart and fruity, candy and raisins. Very interesting. This is quite drinkable with tons of dried fruits, yeast and complex sugars in the taste. Tartness is definitely there. A pretty nice beer, even if it’s more of a sour than an abt...

2007 Bottle. Pours a reddish brown med a beige head. Aroma is dried fruits, plums and some mature notes of madeira. Flavour has a nice sweetness and some tartness. A malty beer with notes of dried fruits, toffee (and the swedish candy kola-remmar) and some roasted notes. You can feel the high ABV just a bit. The finish is a bit roasted with fruity notes, some liquorice, some alcohol and just a hint of bitterness. Good one!

Blind at Dugges 080329. Hazy light red colour, light tan head, a bit low. Sweet aroma with strawberries (ed. perhaps that actually was the cherries from the Lindemans). Malty and fruity. Very bitter and high acidity. High alcohol taste.

Pours a syrupy mahogany color topped with a nice creamy tan head. Subtle hints of cherry in a malty tangy aroma. A tangy mouthfeel. Rich flavors consisting of malts, brown sugar and cherries. Sweet with an alcoholic rush. Bottle states that this is "98% Ale with 2% Ale with cherries added" so I was concerned about a dominant cherry flavor. That was not the case as it blended in quite well. The beer is more enjoyable the more you get through the bottle. Great head retention. Solid.
