MarkBarnes (242), Waterville, New York, USA Jan 22, 2007 Updated: Apr 1, 2007 Jan. 22, 2007; 750ml bottle; 2006 ed. First-ever tasting of this local offering. Wasn’t sure I’d like this after reading about the lambic portion of an unusual recipe. It almost works, but there is still disharmony here, with more sour fruit/cherry than I want to taste in this otherwise excellent brew. The alcohol is also a bit more prominent than it seems to be in the very best examples of the style. May be an acquired taste.
Re-rate on Apr. 2, 2007: Well, if this is an "acquired" taste, I’ve certainly acquired it. This is a best American example of a Quad I’ve yet tried. Just wonderful, and I now pick up it every chance I get. A bottle of this is an excellent partner for a "chill’ session with a good film or couple of CDs. Definitely planning a pilgrimage to the brewery in nearby Cooperstown this summer.
kcmo19 (95), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA Jan 7, 2009 Poured a dark ruby-red with a pretty good size head. The aroma wasn’t all that great; I smelt too much alcohol. What a great taste though, full of cherries and chocolate. And it was very smooth. RedSox2004 (221), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jan 3, 2009 Poured deep brown and ruby red, almost opaque and a bit hazy. Nice two finger head and great lacing. Big malty aromas, including cherries, tart granny smith apples, licorice and mint. Sweet malt flavors, nothing roasted about it, featuring black cherry, apples, and slight coffee, chocolate and brown sugar. Very smooth on the palate, generously carbonated and a very pleasant dark fruit aftertaste. Alcohol has a wonderfully warming effect on a cold winter night. cspring (14), Maineville, Ohio, USA Jan 3, 2009 Bottle from 3 bottle craft pack. Pours a nice dark amber with a off-white/tan head. Tastes of cherries and licorice with a bitter finish. Best of the three beers. Grovlam (3420), Copenhagen, Denmark Jan 2, 2009 Bottle. [Trade with hopscotch and the Florida Crew, thanks buddy] Huge thick beige head that really lasted. Excellent display of lacework. Cloudy dark amber color. Aroma was very explosive with notes of fruit and dried fruit. Strong undertones of alcohol, Port Wine, thick malt. Over the palate notes of raisins, prunes nuts was picked up. Almost mild sour cherry notes as well. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and thick alcoholic texture. Heavy sweet flavor the way I like it. Lingering warming vinous dried fruity finish. One more please. Once again thanks for the trade Eric, see you and your lovely wife in Copenhagen in 2010. GMUcrew7 (249), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jan 1, 2009 Pours an opaque dark brown with a small light tan head that dissipates pretty fast. Smells kind of like those chocolate covered liquor cherries. Has a strong and sweet malty nose with dark fruit and a hint of yeast and alcohol. Sweet malts meld with the dark fruit with hints of molasses and caramel to make this a very tasty beer. Nice sticky palate, I was a little concerned that I would be turned off by the cherries but they are just a small part of the complex array of flavors in this excellent beer.
