Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Pours a rich dark brown with a small creammy white head. Aroma is sweet like cheeries, dates and fig. Taste is full bodied with hints of dart fruit and caramel, keeping it on the sweet side. The flavor last on the palet but the alcohol taste seems to linger and over power the finer notes of the beer. I thinnk the "big" bottles are a little more mellower in the alcohol than the 12 ouncers. A good beer no the less.

12 ounce bottle 2009. Text above says limited edition, but going on 1,500 ratings right now. Pours dark, red-tinged, superfluff head. Full body with soft carbonation. The cherries are subdued both in nose and tongue. Instead, it’s a very yeasty brew, lots of raisin-like notes. Not in the cocoa/chocolatey range of many Belgian strongs.

Bottle. Pours a faintly hazy super dark, brownish amber with a tan, red hued head that leaves sporadic whisps of lacing. Aroma is incredibely rich, with a yeasty bready character. Flavor is potent, sweet, spicy with a somewhat sour bitter finish attributable to the cherry kriek infusion. A lot going on, and fairly aggressive flavor-wise, but not unpleasant. Full bodied, creamy in the mouth with an overriding hint of sweetness in the middle that gives way to a mildly sour finish.

Bottle at The Half Pint, NYC. Nice dark red body with slight tan head. Nose of lots of fruits, malts, caramel. Taste also of caramel, bitter and fruits. Sweet, but not too much. But quite fruity (or bitter) to me. Enjoyable all the same.

A dark almost plum colored body. Aroma is rather sweet, strongly resembling dark fruits such as prunes and dates, with notes of cherry. In the background are some toasty notes. Body is nice and thick with qucikly fading carbonation. Flavor is rather toasty with a noticeable liquorish character. The mouth feel is nice and full with a finish that tapers off slowly, leaving the slightly stick flavor behind. A great beer from Ommmegang.

Picked this up as part of a three beer gift pack during the 2009 holidays. Some fruit notes upon initial pour but is dominated with nutty aromas, very roasty even woody, with hints of caramel ... reminds me of a dessert wine. Clear amber red pour with a hazy off white head that laces the glass. Medium sweetness, with hints of alcohol. Solid body with a creamy texture, average carbonation with a long finish. This is a great beer to warm you up in the winter months.

clear dark red, thick smooth soft light brown head. Looks great. very very nice aroma of dark fruits, caramel, faint perfumy berries. very low bitterness and a strong aroma.marcipan or almonds, apricot. interesting and definetly nice. flavor is pleasantly tofee and caramel bitter, faint boozy, faint berries sweetness which balances the brew greatly. something about the bitterness i don’t quite like, but overall very intersting and smooth flavor profile. extremely well done twist on a belgian style. the 2% blend works perfectly.

Pours a deep copper red with almost no head. Aroma is sweet malt and cherries. Taste is sweet malt, cherries, belgian yeast. Nice beer, but not groundbreaking.
