Commercial Description:
This creamy, impenetrable, full bodied ale gets some of its buried sweetness from the use of lactose (milk sugar). The chocolate and black malts creates its deep color and its balanced roasted coffee flavors.

A deep dark stout with a thin dark lacing moka head. Herbaceous chocolate in aroma, with some lactic notes. In mouth, a clean stout with chocolate and cold coffee, medium bodied. On tap at brewpub, Inbičrenationale IV, May 2007.

On tap, Eli Cannon’s. Body is relatively light for a stout, certainly not thick enough to support the apparent flavors of cream, coffee, and back-palate bitterness this beer possesses. Decently tasty, but I just didn’t find much balance here. When I saw “milk stout” on the menu, I wanted something with forward sweetness and creaminess. What I got was a mismatched dry stout with a hint of milk.

Cask at GBBF 2007. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet and very roasted as well as with notes of soy sauce. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt, soy sauce, whiskey, wood, and coffee, leading to a dry bitter and roasted coffee finish.

My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts and discreet vanilla spiciness diversify the peaceful lactose approach of this sociable Milk Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the brown-sleeved black.
-Roasted malt and supporting hop bitterness is long but delicate.
-Light tartness is perceived towards the end of the sip.
-Some soy accompanies the vanilla.

On tap at the brewpub.
