Pours a dark mahogany hue with a strong fine head that lasts. Abundant tight bubbles emerge from the beer. Aroma is definitely cardboard and malt with a whiff of melinoidens. No hop aroma. Rather simple really but inviting. Mouth feel is thin and crisp. Well attenuated. Smooth with no alcohol evident. Flavor is much more like a dunkel rather than a English strong ale. balanced up front with no hop flavor, sweet dark fruit flavored middle and finishing with a definite dark malt bitterness. Interesting and enjoyable. Overall this is a good beer that would warm you up on a cold winter’s night. The oxidation and attenuation detract a bit, but otherwise I would recommend this beer. I might classify this as an old or stock ale.

Fine dark amber. Decent foam disappeared quickly, leaving residues.
The nice smell contained hops, caramel, some grass and grapefruit.
The taste was fruity and sweet, toffee, nuts. Medium bitterness and body. Descent stuff. bitbucket (2036), Kirkland, Washington, USA

A little bitter in the end, but not too much. (A very subjectiv judgement, I know, but this is my first rating and I hope to improve in the future.) grigoriuri (1), New York, USA does not count | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2009 Not too much on Aroma, little bread and caramel malt, but that could be that my wife is cooking with garlic and saffron so I can’t appreciate the smell. Beautiful rich amber color with a little haze that suits me fine. Love the flavour. Rich in malt but the hop takes over with a zesty bite. Doesn’t strike me as a winter ale, this is a year rounder. notalush (2693), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 17, 2009 50cl bottle - hazy amber, moderate lace - aroma is lightly spicy, herbal, biscuity, mildly estery, with some buttery diacetyl underneath - full, soft carbonation - some dry, crackery maltiness, with some moderate toffee sweetness underneath - some herbal, tea-like character - a bit of oiliness on the back end, and left behind on the lips - weird - diacetyl and bitterness on the end, a hint of peppery heat - fairly authentic, just not all that good.
