Commercial Description:
Oregon Trail Bourbon Porter is a beer as big as the West. Masterfully brewed in the true pioneer spirit. This robust porter is aged in Kentucky oak bourbon barrels. The result is a deep mahogany elixir, rich with oaky smoothness, bold bourbonesque aroma, with hints of fruit and vanilla. Good at either end of the trail.

No. 2 Bottle shared by Daknole. Pours hazy reddish-brown with thin tan head. Rich bourbon aroma, also filled with coffee, chocolate, coconut, vanilla. Soft, gentle carbonation. Cake crust and mocha cake. Dark chocolate ganache, yum! Roasted coffee. Nice character even if not outstanding.

Pours black without much head forming. The aroma is very sweet showing vanilla, oak, a hint of chocolate, and molasses. The flavor is pretty light, only a hint of roastiness, then plenty of bourbon vanilla, and a bit of cookie dough towards the finish. Medium body.

Bomber. YUM! Dark, dark brown pour wtih a small very light tan head. Aroma is full of lots of bourbon and I love it! Some chocolate, prunes and bourbon and an aroma of coconut...oh yeah. Flavor has a great dose of bourbon but it doesn’t hide the dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate. MMMMM!

Snifter. Pours a dark walnut color. with a small offwhite head. Nose reminds me only of putting whiskey in nestle quik. Chocolate, bourbon, burnt, little toast in the nose. Buttery bourbon flavor with some weaker porter tones, some coffee, some dark chocolate, dry. Great beer, very boozy warm palate.

Pours deep brown with a lasting tight bubbled medium tan head. Awesome oak bourbon nose. The flavor is a bit off, but still oak and coconut mostly. A touch of astringency. A bit thin in the body. Bottle says to drink before 12/24/08, so I think I should have not sat on this one.

Bomber, Batch #2 (9.1%). Poured cola brown with an easily-resuscitated cap of oaky head. The aroma found sweet bourbon and sour oak upfront, taking some breathing time before the porter came out.. chocolate and molasses gave a wonderful impression when they showed.. whatever bourbon they used gave a wonderful impression! The flavor opened with tangy bourbon, oak, and vanilla preceding the base porter.. sweeter candy bar-like chocolates (3 Musketeers?) and coconut on the middle.. finished with more bourbon, fudge, coconut, and vanilla. Heavier-bodied and syrupy on the palate with carbonation just lightly accenting the prickly oak.. warm in the aftertaste, remniscent of finishing a glass of bourbon. Excellent stuff!
