Commercial Description:
Oregon Trail Bourbon Porter is a beer as big as the West. Masterfully brewed in the true pioneer spirit. This robust porter is aged in Kentucky oak bourbon barrels. The result is a deep mahogany elixir, rich with oaky smoothness, bold bourbonesque aroma, with hints of fruit and vanilla. Good at either end of the trail.

Red-tinged medium brown colour. Light brown sugar nose with hazelnuts and pecan. Very sweet brew with a high vanilla quotient, some background dark malts and a bit of a boozy finish.

(22oz bottle) Medium beige head that dissipates rapidly atop clear red-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, bourbon/vanilla. Taste is medium sweet, roast/coffee, some bourbon. Medium body. I find the last sentence of the commercial description a little scary, but maybe I’m reading something that isn’t there. I do like the use of the word Bourbonesque -- maybe that’s one that belongs in the lexicon for describing all these bourbon barrel beers, saving us all lots of time that otherwise would be spent typing in several words to describe a single generic quality.

Thisted tasting. Courtesy of After4eveer, thanks Tom. It is black with a red hue and a creamy head. The aroma has notes of bourbon, wood, roasted malt, light ashes and dark fruits. The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of caramel, vanilla, bourbon, spicy alcohol, chocolate and wood. The bourbon is just right for me, a nice one indeed.

22oz bottle dipped in red wax. Poured a dark brown color with a large sized tan head. Aromas of oaky woodiness, vanilla, bourbon (not over powering), roast, and a little smokey. Tastes of vanilla, bourbon, oak, cocoa, and caramel. Bourbon is stronger in the aroma but again, not over powering. On the sweeter side. I liked the way the barrel aging was done on this one.

Bottle... O-Town Throwdown Part Deux... Pitch black ale with a small, light brown head. The nose is a swirl of rich chocolate, earthy wood and Kentucky bourbon. Well-balanced flavor; chocolaty with a blend of sourmash and vanilla. Medium-bodied with fizzy carbonation. Bourbony, chocolaty finish. Pulls up just shy of being an absolute knockout!
