beerguy101 (3547), Newark, California, USA Aug 2, 2004 Medium amber color. Largish head. Aroma is malty, wood and smoke. A medium bodied smoked beer. Malts are fruity and sweet. Touches of wood and smoke. Hops are slightly spicy. Smokey without being over the top. Nice balance. Touches of caramel. The smoke compliments the malt fruitiness and hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. 5000 (2401), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA Mar 5, 2007 Bottle: Dark caramel, quite thick and hazy, large foamy off-white head, sticky lacing. This is probably one of the better looking Smoked beers I have seen. Straight up smoked malts, slight peated malt, slight campfire or charred wood. Very simple, yet very good. No bacon like other examples which is a plus! Smooth smoked malt, fairly meaty. Wow! I gotta say, so far one of my favorites in the style! Underlying caramel malts, very pale tho. Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full. Very smooth. Soft lingering charred wood and campfire. Very clean. Simple, yet elegant. Nothing out of the ordinary, but extremely solid! Recommended if you don’t like your Smoked beers tasting like ashtrays or bacon..

jah noth (956), Rochester, New York, USA Dec 1, 2007 Hazy amber incolor with little head. Mild hickory aroma sits atop caramel sweetness. Crisp amber malt flavor is married with delicate smokiness. Some light hops balance the smokiness. This is a nice surprise and a real great beer. DA (2586), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Oct 18, 2006 Picked up a bottle of this in Eugene. This was a really nice smoke beer. Pours very clear copper/amber color with a long lasting white head. Very rich smoke nose that blends well with a sweet caramel malt note. Throughout this beer really just blended well, never a harsh dry smokiness, just sweet smoke that trailed off in the finish nicely. ClarkVV (3550), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Dec 25, 2004 2004 draught @ Redbones. Wow, finally another American smoked beer in the area. I was very happy to see this on draught. Aroma shows it is a smoked beer, with some charred cedar notes, light spruce boughs on the fire and some lightly salty pork notes. Flavor starts out with a very sweet, caramel malt appeal, mixed in, but not necessarily outdone by the smoke. It works well with the malt and reminds me somewhat of Rogue Smoke, but it loses similarities on the hops, as this is not a highly bitter smoked beer; which is quite ok. Some lightly nutty carapils like malts add a good backbone and provide a chewy, nutty texture. Honey flavors also are thrown in to the mix and it has just pleny of pleasing smoke flavor to wash it all down. A bit light of body, perhaps moreso than I would like, but altogether impressive for a small American brewery. Deep amber-organe colored body, transluscent with a rapidly disipating light beige head.
