The head lasted and produced good lacing. Malty stout aroma. Milk chocolate and coffee flavor almost like a mocha or coffee ice cream. Some hoppy background and a smoky after taste. Light to medium body. Thought it would be fuller. Pretty good anyway. Magicdave6 (5490), London, Greater London, England

Pours perfectly, really dark black with great brown head. Aroma is roasted malts with a little grassy hops. Taste is reasted malts and maybe burnt coffee with a balancing sweetness. Very nice ale, would like to get it in more often. wavers1 (129), novato, California, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 3, 2005 Pours really dark auburn. Nose is licorice and Nyquil. Taste is...how can I put this? Flat, barren, desolate..perhaps a wasteland of otherwise potential complexities, a stout complete with tastebud-tumbleweeds. Aside from typical cocoa/coffee/roasted malt, and a bit of a sourness, its a bland stout with a creamy palatte. tofubeth (9), Vermont, USA does not count | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 17, 2005 A solid stout--one good for moving people past the regular brews into specialty beers. Not nearly as good as the Dark Island Ale, but a fine chaser to Dark Island. mephisto (1144), Taiwan

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 31, 2005 looked really nice, a big thick frothy head on top of an onyx liquid, aroma was equally as enticing, with lots of toasted malts, a bit of smoke, coffee and chocolate. unfortunately for this beer, it was downhill from there, flavor was very single faceted - toasted chocolate - and the aftertaste was a bit sour and grassy. body was alot thinner than i think it should be. this could be alot better with some heavier malt content that would boost the flavors and the body to a higher level. | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Jul 18, 2005 Pours a beautiful onyx with a healthy, frothy head that clings to the glass. Aroma is almost exclusively chocolate, with a bit of smoked malt thrown in for good measure. Flavor is a titilating blend of smoke and malt, heavy on the smoke. Some peat is detectable. This is a stout all unto its own. I WOULD LOVE ANOTHER ONE OF THESE.
