Aroma of dark roasted malt, tar and a lot of smoke. Somewhat thin flavor but still very smokey with a little malt underneath. Too thin, too smokey and not very good! | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Mar 29, 2004 Nice thick rootbeer float head (big creamy bubbles) which leads to some great lacing. Aroma of cocco puffs (in milk), dark roasted grains and a hint of coffee. Color is essentially black. Flavor is not quite as thick as I expected. Slightly chalky and thinner that expected. Good roasted flavor, almost burnt at times like a crispy burnt steak that when you eat it dissintegrates into little carbon pieces (gritty). Good flavor though. Finish has a distinctive coffee flavor and leaves a chalky film in the mouth. Little bit of bitterness from the hops also. I keep going back to the chalky/gritty sensation but the beer is still decent beyond that. TheBeerGod (3147), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 14, 2004 Pours near black with a brown halo. The head is brownish red. Nose is roasted malt and burnt wood. Some lighter coffee notes as well. The taste seems more of the same - roasted malt, burnt wood, and some coffee. The body is a little thin but this in no way detracts from the beer. Otherwise the finish is smooth but a little bitter from the light hops and coffee. Good beer!
