darkguardian (506), Florida, USA Jan 27, 2009 16oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a decent tan head. Nose is interesting, some grape, vanilla, and coffee. The flavor is utterly unique as I have come to expect from this brewery. Sort of like eating toast and vanilla beans with coffee. Very bready and malty with tons of vanilla and a little coffee with no bitterness. A little peat smoke but not alot. Slightly watery, to be expected given the low abv, but complex and unique. drjay44 (757), Salida, Colorado, USA Jan 21, 2009 500 ml. bottle. Pours a mocha colored head of good duration, over an utterly opaque blackish brown body.....nose is heavily roasted malts with coffee chocolate and a bit of molasses.... tastes of dry malts, much less sweetness than the nose would suggest, finishes dry with a bit of lingering vanilla and coffee....mouthfeel is light , but creamy, an interesting brew. An almost perfect example of a dry stout. SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Jan 19, 2009 Bottle: Poured a black brown with a tan color head. Aroma was vinegar and coffee. Taste was roasted malt and coffee bean. RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Jan 12, 2009 Way too similar to Dark Island, in my opinion. dark brownish-black pour with a thick tan head. Same smokey peat notes, same malt over hops dryness. Roasted malt. I dunno. Was not a big fan. mcjay (301), Neenah, Wisconsin, USA Dec 27, 2008 Pours dark with a medium brown head. Aroma and flavor of dark chocolate with a hint of roasted coffee. solifugid (11), New Paltz, New York, USA Dec 6, 2008 Got a bottle of this from Half Time in Poughkeepsie, NY. Pours black with a dark brown head. Smells and tastes like stale cigarette smoke, if the cigarette was dipped in coffee. Quickly disappearing aftertaste of - yep, you guessed it - cigarette smoke. A disappointing offering from a great brewery.
daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Nov 28, 2008 Bottle from total wine. glack pour with a tan head. Aroma is roasted chocolate and coffee beans. Flavor is a tad bitter and flat. Not such a great stout here. Too roated, not enough body....blah. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Nov 27, 2008 Nice dark black color with a decent head that stuck around longer than I expected. Aromas of roasted malts and some chocolate. Touches of dried fruit. Flavors fell off a bit. Somewhat watery with some dust and metal. Still nicely roasty. Less chocolate, but touches of coffee. Still pretty decent.
