Poured a clear deep reddy brown colour with a thin off-white head. Sweet, malty and fruity aroma. Flavour similarly sweet with smoky malt and caramel present and a rich, syrupy, stickyish mouthfeel. Some warming alcohol. Good balance and a lingering dryish finish. Enjoyable...and that’s my triple century. bigbobdog (39), USA

| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Aug 16, 2008 Pour is amber to reddish color with lasting light beige head. Smell is malty, sticky, sweet. Decent, not great.
Taste is sticky, sweet, and alcoholic. Tastes lightly peaty and scottish. Not my favorite style. Does not taste like a barley wine. I AM A FIREMOOSE! i love beer. This is not one of my favorites at all. Radiohead is on the t.v. Cookies in the oven. Sticky, sweet, and peaty. yuck. SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 15, 2008 Deep copper in color with a moderate head of off-white bubbles which meant more carbonation than I expected. Aromas were of caramel, fig, plum and light Chinese Five Spice. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with nice carbonation to keep everything fresh. The palate was nicely sweet balanced by the carbonation and some bitter hops toward the back of the mouth. It was sweeter than I expected based on the nose. Quite drinkable for a Barleywine as the alcohol was not noticable. gwelch925 (31), Taylor Mill, Kentucky, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 14, 2008 Bottle. Orkney Skull Splitter is the first Barley Wine that I have consumed. Pours a dark brown with a wispy little head. The aroma had fruity and spice fragrances that reminded me of an actual grape-based wine accompanied with roasted malts and caramel. Skull Splitter ended up having a very smooth texture and sweet malty taste. Hopefully all barley wines end up being this enjoyable. iammarc (193), Inverness, Scotland

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 12, 2008 Bottle - poured a hazy brown with an off white foam head. Nice berry brewed wine aroma. Palate filler, with a full flavored taste and smooth. Blend of alcohol, brown sugar and dark fruit sweet mix, hops on the low down. A bit of a roasted quality but not weighted down. Excellent brew.
