Aroma is very "scotch" aleish. Slightest hints of floral and earth. Extremely low head retention, too style. I’m not sure what to make of the flavor... nice earthy notes, vinous, soapy medicinal, get the picture it’s all over the place with I suspect some off flavors. Very nice mouth feel. Something of a disappointment. I’ll try it again as hopefully this bottle was stale, but if not the score will be lowered and the bier will not be drank again. But yes as the label says it’s deceptively light and dangerously drinkable. Hugerat (432), somerville, Massachusetts, USA

This gets a 3.58 on ratebeer? Really? No head to speak of with a rather unappealing pale reddish-brown color. Cloyingly sweet with an awful soapy cemical flavor. 8.5 ABV is not very skull-splitting either. cheapdark (2026), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA
| 1.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Mar 10, 2008 OK, pretty interesting name, made me ignore it for a year or two before I tasted it. Attractive red foil on top of an intimidating label. Mild candy aroma. Initial taste is bitter strong ropes.Difficult at time. Intimidating as the ax on the label. Over the top and, at times, unfriendly. Leather saddle soap lasting finish. Quite a barley wine. rmussman (905), California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 7, 2008 Wooo. What a punch when you first take a sip. Has a thin lacey head and a light brown hue similar to Newcastle but a bit more cloudy. Goes down smooth with a heavy malt taste with lots of fruit flavoring. A very well crafted brew. dm9831 (1167), Monee, Illinois, USA

I can’t believe this is listed as a barley wine cause it tastes more like a bock to me, Pours a reddish brown. Aroma is caramel and syrup. Very light in the mouth, a bit of a hops kick and some carbonation. Pretty durned good.
