There are hints of other things such as chocolate and dark fruits, but the malt really sets the tone. Pours a nice burnished copper with a little beige head which turns into a ring around the top before long. Again the malts are fairly dominant in the flavour but there are more side notes here than the aroma; caramel, plums, brown sugar, honey and butter all make an impression. Fairly thick and syrupy mouthfeel but very easy to drink; alcohol very well hidden, this is less intense than a lot of barley wines but really enjoyable none the less. madquacker (724), Canberra ACT, Australia

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 30, 2009 330 mL bottle. Pours red brown with an off-white head. Aroma is almost exactly like grape juice: sweet with dark fruits. Flavor is a good mix of sweet honey, white bread, and dark fruit. Reminds me a lot of the first time I had Old Horizontal. Really nice barley wine. Not as aggressive as many American barley wines, but great flavors. dimenhetfield (210), , Florida, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 25, 2009 Poured a dark garnet color with a thin beige head into my snifter. Smells of raisin, dough, fig, and a hint of earth. Malty but somewhat nondescript flavor. Fruity? Medium-full body and slightly sweet. There is a barely perceptible amount of alcohol warmth. A good barley wine if you want to get drunk but not really one to sip and savor the complexities of. Very drinkable. jetzler (622), oklahoma city, Oklahoma, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 17, 2009 12oz bottle into a snifter. Pours dark brown and ruby, almost purple with a decent off-white head. After a bit of warmth, the nose is tons of alcohol mixed with roasted malts and dark fruits. The flavor is very sweet up front with a long dry and roasty finish. It’s rather thick and syrupy and almost tough to smash down after awhile.
