The aroma is smoky and vinous with some oak, dark fruits and tobacco.
The flavor is sugary sweet with some dark fruits and smoke leading to a lightly bitter dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium and creamy with some slightly sharp carbonation.
Overall, this was a very nice brew. It’s hard to classify - a little smoky, and some belgian qualities. It’s definitely not a typical Scotch Ale. jblendy (518), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 28, 2006 Pours dark amber with a small retentive tan head. Lots of crystal malt dark fruit aromas. Flavor is creamy caramel, nutty, dark fruitiness, and no alcohol to speak of. Palate is medium/full, has retentive flavor, creamy feel, and slight bitterness. DrewTaylor (154), Michigan, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Nov 26, 2006 Tough and meaty beer with strong nutty tones. Dark brown. Great smooth texture. Smooth. Love the name and the beers not too bad either. FistFullOfCats (162), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 17, 2006 Bottle. Pours a dark and opaque brown; this beer looks like coke. No head to speak of. Aroma is kinda gross actually, like cold spinach or collard greens. Yuck. Flavor of coffee, toffee, and well, that barley wine bitterness. Ends super nutty, specificity hazelnut, but also some almond on the back end. The feel is great, nice and thick, you can feel it move around you teeth and tongue. This is obviously well made and thought out, and actually gets better the more you drink (maybe its the alcohol content), but frankly I just don’t think I like barley wines in general. I will enjoy the rest of the pack, but I don’t think I’ll be getting it again. tcfishler (65), USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 17, 2006 Dull medium brown, with a good head for a brew of this ABV.
Lots of alcohol aromas, with some yeast as well.
Broad, smooth, very barleywinelike mouthfeel, with laidback flavors of caramel and fruit.
"Dangerously drinkable" is definitely appropriate. buckybeer (666), Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA
