This beer smells incredible. The taste is very smooth and it tastes like you have almost a solid in your mouth this one is so thick. Very chocolatey and malty. This is is a great beer. I would buy this again soon. I cannot believe this is 98 IBUS valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 26, 2008 Can courtesy notalush - thanks Brandon! Something made me want to drink this out of the can, but for the purposes of rating properly, it was poured into a glass, and I must say, there’s a certain flair of pouring something this thick from a can...I feel I should be in my garage doing something like this! Anyways, pours black with thin tan head. Aroma does not go too far, but is full of malty and coffee aromas, and can be best described as ’sweet’. Flavor is very good, albeit bordering on too sweet...extremely lactic, full of caramel malt and chocolate, a hint of coffee and some oatmeal. High level of drinkability on this one, and the texture is just about spot on...some creaminess/oiliness, but not overly so. A nice offering! Indulgence (141), Ajo, Arizona, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 26, 2008 I likey... I drank this too fast to even sit there and contemplate all of its qualities, which are many. I’ll have to drink more and concentrate next time... yummy. Wait for the write up later.... LOL. But seriously, just like the Old Chub, these beers are just too easy to drink. I remember that it is pitch black, the flavor is a balance between the bitter chocolate coffee espresso and oatmeal stout like creaminess, palate is velvety and finish is dry sweet, just right for me. | 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Sep 23, 2008 Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Smells of coffee, roasted malt. Tastes overly sweet with some lactic qualities. I’m not seeing what others are seeing in this I guess. elihapa (1066), Honolulu, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 23, 2008 poured from 12oz can. Pours a dark dark brown with one of the darkest heads I’ve ever seen. Rich aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and some molasses. Flavor is very, very rich, reminding me of a dense chocolate-espresso lava cake. This was absolutely delicious. Palate is thick and full bodied with almost no carbonation. Notes of roasts, espresso, chocolate, hops, and darkness. Finishes on a deep bitter chocolate/charcoal note that was supremely tasty. Right up there with the top impy stouts I’ve tried. IPALover (57), Carlsbad, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 20, 2008 Aroma is thick malty with notes of chocolate and some alcohols. Appearance is black/opaque with a nice brown head with nice legs. Flavor is dominated by a heavy chocolate and cocoa flavor. I get licorice taste. Some hot tasting fuols are still preset. Overall this huge impy stout has a very nice overall taste that is very smooth and drinkable. Held back some points due to the remaining hot fusels. JoeinUccle (911), Brussels, Belgium
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 19, 2008 That pretty can pours a thick, viscous black into my snifter, producing only a thin, dark brown head despite a vigorous pour. Inviting nose of strong, roasted coffee with bits of chocolate, smoke and sweet whiskey. Flavor is a rounded bitterness with very light sweetness, incredible dry-roasty aromatic backdrop with espresso and that sweetness providing a faint impression of dark chocolate. Touches of smoke and whiskey again. Booze is detectable but fits perfectly well in the overall flavor. Thick mouthfeel and a bit dry. Roasty-bitter aftertaste. Big and interesting slow-sipper.
