ElGaucho (1719), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 26, 2008 Bottle purchased at brewery (Point Brew Supply) after sampling it in the tasting room. Dark fruit with some alcohol strength in the nose. Roasted malt. Very dark, nearly opaque body with reddish hues. Very small tan head when poured that diminishes to a mere ring. An artisitic flower caused by carbonation rising from the middle of the glass forms on the top. Minimal lace. Strong alcohol aspect. Hint of hops in the finish. Belgian aspect is captured. Skyview nailed it when he compared this to black licorice. Quite literally, liquid black licorice. Since I’m not a fan of black licorice, my enjoyment of this brew was somewhat tempered. Nevertheless, a solid brew.
Stine (1275), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Apr 3, 2008 Pours charcoal hued; slightly greyed tannish head. Pointy aroma of dates, figs, anise, and black licorice; roasty, spicy, exotically sweet. Watery flavor with some coconut milk, candy sugar, black licorice and honey; quite weak in comparison to the curious and intriguing nose. Prickly, medium to full bodied palate where alcohol is kindly understated; finish is drawn out with some red pepper and dark spices on red meat. Weird, quizzical, cool stuff. Thanks for sharing, Bob! HodagADV (3), appleton, Wisconsin, USA does not count Mar 29, 2008 Yikes... this one will grab hold of ya. A nice big beer. Lets hope this one makes regular rotation. BDR (1850), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Mar 26, 2008 Thanks to Skyview for sharing. Dark brown color with faint head. Malty aroma with a light fruit and spice character. JK (2355), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Mar 7, 2008 Not a lot to this one, but the flavor and aroma is good. Very low on hops and focused on the malt, which is in the aroma and flavor. A little sweet, and surprisingly thick and heavy palate, which is probably the best quality of this beer. Thanks to Skyview for sharing.
