Commercial Description:
Helsinki Göld, Otter Creek’s fifth beer on the "OTTER CREEK WORLD TOUR," is a golden ale brewed with juniper and rye, inspired by the Finnish beer "sahti." In the “Sahti Belt,” just north of Helsinki, the Finnish beer sahti is still being brewed the same way that it was 400 years ago. According to tradition, bags of rye and barley are soaked in the rivers and lakes to germinate, and then malted in the family sauna. The Finnish brewers use juniper branches to filter the malt from the wort. The juniper berries add a gin-like bitterness to the brew and the rye imparts a malty creaminess. As they say in Finland, Kippis!

Aroma is mostly sweet malt and some subtle rye plus a woody hoppish background-there is an even more subtle herbally twinge but its too distant to define. Flavor is very sweet malt but i think that may be accentuated by the rye-there is a bitterness which i suppose is the juniper which initially i didnt care for, but as it warmed, an almost perfumey woodiness came out. Interesting beer but not one of my fav.

22 oz bottle.golen/light amber in color. Aroma is rye, ginger, and juniper. Taste is again- ginger?, rye, and malt, with a moderate hop bitterness. Finishes spicy and lightly bitter.

Poured a little darker yellow, bronze than I anticipated with a thin white head. Smells of grain, slight hops and juniper. Taste was nice, a little sweet and malty with a hint of rye and honey. Finish is clean, a little watery. I would have liked the finish to be more crisp. All in all, nice beer, not spectacular.

Pours a boring honey color without much of a white head. Pleasant honey aroma with a bit of a bready rye background. Rye flavor with a bit of a ginger candy bite and a bit of honest to god gin likeness lurking at the very back. Actually, those gin notes are a little unpleasant to me as I detest the stuff. Luckily, the gin like nastiness isn’t strong enough for me to pour this one out before gettting through a good 3/5 of the 22 oz bottle. I should have shared this one.

Has a moderate to stong dough hoppy aroma. Clear dark golden color. Tastes like dough yeast with under tones of light hops. Juniper is also evident. Rerate Malt has come out more in the aroma with light spice. Yeast flavor has become spicier. Very light palate. The beer is still as bad as it was last year.

From a 22 oz bottle:pretty dark brew for one labled (Gold) ... .this is a deep copper, lightly carbonated with a 1/4-inch solid head. There’s a strong aroma ... alcohol and sweet malt. The flavor is interesting ... pine, bark, a juice-less grapefruit, grass. Somewhat reminiscent of the one or two other Finnish sahti’s I’ve tried, but this is actually drinkable (I am not enough man to drink the real ones). Decent enough pour and something very different! This pours as a clear, medium gold that sits beneath a fleeting white head. Dry spicy malt aroma. The flavor is lightly sweet with a touch of dryness as it approaches the finish. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of any new flavors that should accompany a true Sahti. You just can’t hide juniper very easily and I detected none in this. Still looking for a good Sahti.
