Commercial Description:
Mud Bock Spring Ale makes its appearance with the spring thaw. The main feature of this full bodied beer is a broad and deep malt flavor. While sweeter than our other beers, a wine-like character provides balance in the flavor profile. Has fruity, herbal and floral notes in the aroma. Available February to May

Bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Poured clear deep brown with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate complex toasted sweet malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate balanced malty sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Good drinkable brew, but average for style.

Smells strongly of dark caramel malts, quite pleasant smelling. Taste is unusual, but not in a bad way. Light body, yet flavorful with dark chocolately malts. Very nice

Bomber. Pours brown with a small soap-sud head. Aroma has earth, butter, peat and caramel malt. Initial flavors are soft malt and nuts, which then move to more caramel, roasts and soil. By the finish, this brew has a rich bock-profile going on. Too bad it wasn’t like that throughout; the beginning touches weren’t all that interesting.

Bottle. Pours red brown with a beige head. Malty sweet aroma, caramel, a touch of roast and a hint of maple syrup. The flavor also has sweet malt, with some dry chocolate and a touch of toast. A little bit of bitterness in the finish.

Robust malt aroma with chocolate and coffee hints. Really dark amber color with a small white head. Strong malt aroma with a light amount of bitterness fading in the finish.

Style; glass: American Brown; tumbler 12 fl oz x 5.6% ABV = 67.2 / 60 = 1.12 beers * 150 C = 168 calories (est.) Purchased at: Canal’s Lawrenceville, NJ for $1.20 Aroma: dirt, dust, tea, leaves, mold, appropriate for the style Visuals: Packaging is not really appealing to me, but well done. I prefer realism and seriousness to cartoons and playfulness in beer label design. Deep brown, brilliant. Retains head indefinitely, lacing is fleeting. Taste: begins very roasted, malty, but not heavy, middle is nutty and leafy, finish is a bit of smoke and clean water. Palate: begins rounded, middle is drying, a bit washy, finishes rather thin, somewhat spongey. Overall: Bocks, in general, underwhelm me, but this one is nicely done for the style, and is a superior value, in my opinion. originally posted at: <a href="http://beercritic.wordpress.com/2009/02

Bottle. Sweet malty aroma. Dark brown body, moderate off-white head. Flavor is very malty, with caramel and chocolate sweetness, distinct nuttiness, and a lingering pleasant finish. Quite nice.
