Commercial Description:
Next Stop: Scotland.... Otter Kilter, A Scottish-Style Wee Heavy. Otter Kilter, Otter Creek's sixth stop on the "OTTER CREEK WORLD TOUR", is a style modeled after the Scotch Wee Heavy ales. Wee Heavy is a traditional Scotch ale. The rich, malty character can be attributed to the native strain of barley known as Golden Promise. This barley is prized by both ale brewers and Scotch whiskey distillers. And it's not hard to see why once you've tried it. Wee Heavy ales feature a rich caramel flavor that is achieved by boiling the wort in the brew kettle for an extra long time. Hops only grow in the southern part of Britain in England, home of the "Sassenachs" the ancient enemy of the Scots. Needless to say hops are used sparingly in Scotch ales. As they say in Scotland, Slainte!

I wasn’t too impressed with this beer, usually Scotch ale en devour in its rich malty base, but this one seems a bit flat. The re are some flavors of caramel but over all it falls flat.

The aroma seems promising with rich malts that hint at caramel and toffee and some hops. The appearance is mahogany with a smaller head than expected. The flavor is like the aroma with a resin like aftertaste that is not totally good. The palate is a wee bit not heavy. Overall I like it but that’s not saying it’s great at all. It’s not true to the style.

Courtesy Degarth. Dark brown body with red highlights when held to the light. Tan head, sudsy, 1.5 fingers thick and good retention. Some lacing. Peat, smoke, malt, tobacco leaves, caramel and toffee on the nose. Flavor adds some fruitiness into play, and more heavy doses of tobacco and caramel, along with dark sweet malts. Well rounded body, great mouthfeel. Lengthy finish, peat, tobacco and caramel linger all the way to the end. Good stuff.

Pours brown with red highlights...light brown foam....smells of malts and vanilla...tastes bland and way too heavy for the flavor, as if the body was lighter, the flavor may represent properly, but the body is thin...hmmm so to me this beer is improper.....still nice to drink, but i’ve had way better Scottish ales....so try again Otter Creek Brewing

Nov. 22, 2007; 22 oz. bomber. Burnt-roasty, malty, caramel-sugary, "stouty" flavor; on the heavy & too-sweet side. A bit of poorly-disguised alcohol seeps into the aroma & flavor. Enjoyable, but I’d like to try some of the more critically-acclaimed examples of the style for the sake of comparison.

Bottle from Capone’s. Deep brown pur with 1-finger khaki head. This appears deep ruby through direct light. Smells like cabernet, nuts, some roasty malt, brown sugar. Tastes roasty malty, with cabernet notes, some nuts, and some figgy brown sugary notes. One of the better brews I’ve had from this brewer.

Pours a very pretty, translucent crimson with mahogany core. Well-retained thin white head. The nose has adequate peat, plenty of toasted grains, lots of caramel and lesser chocolate. With repeated inhalation, the peat notes fade into a foul barnyard aroma, something close to manure. No infection noted, but thisseems off base for the style and definitely isn’t what I’d expect from the style. Peat character in the flavor is very solid and forthright. Sweetness is medium, bitterness low, acidity nil. There is nothing memorable here. The finish leaves a faint smoke lingering, as well as more caramel and light sweetness. Heavy lingering caramel is drizzled throughout the waning taste. The mouthfeel has medium-high carbonation and the body is medium. Pretty solid, smooth. Decent.

Courtesy of DragonStout. Pours clear brown with tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, mild molasses, chocolate malts, earthiness and peat. Could have a bigger aroma. The flavor is fruity dates, caramel, prunes, earthiness and some mild peat just like in the aroma. It ends smooth and mildly roasty with a faint lingering peatiness.
