Commercial Description:
Next Stop: Scotland.... Otter Kilter, A Scottish-Style Wee Heavy. Otter Kilter, Otter Creek's sixth stop on the "OTTER CREEK WORLD TOUR", is a style modeled after the Scotch Wee Heavy ales. Wee Heavy is a traditional Scotch ale. The rich, malty character can be attributed to the native strain of barley known as Golden Promise. This barley is prized by both ale brewers and Scotch whiskey distillers. And it's not hard to see why once you've tried it. Wee Heavy ales feature a rich caramel flavor that is achieved by boiling the wort in the brew kettle for an extra long time. Hops only grow in the southern part of Britain in England, home of the "Sassenachs" the ancient enemy of the Scots. Needless to say hops are used sparingly in Scotch ales. As they say in Scotland, Slainte!

Poured a deep, opaque, mahogany with a creamy slightly tan head. Smelled of peat moss, malt, brown sugar and candy. Tastes the same, sweet and smooth. Spicy finish. Good but not great.

Bomber. Pours brown with a sparse off white head. Smells of sweet malt and possesses some rosey qualities. Tastes of rich chocolate, some tame dark fruit and some sweet sugar. Mouthfeel is a little watery. Finish is sweet and has some coffee like qualities. Surprisingly balanced and flavorful for its ABV. I would have liked some peatiness in this but otherwise, it was well done.

Bottle; poured a reddish brown with very little off white head. Aroma was very fruity; Some light peat, toffee and caramel elements. Flavor was heavy on the malt; slightly sweet and got better the more I drank. Actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Quality beer.

22 oz bottle, thanks to skyhand! Pours darkly red and brown with little to no head. A sweet and fruity malt aroma is present. Toffee, a hint of chocolate, and a very small hint of peat malt are detectable in the flavor. A bit of bread dough also comes through the body. It’s a bit thin for what I would normally expect out of a Scotch style ale, but over all it has a nicely done fruit sense to it that is usually not detectable in Scotch ales. Enjoyable overall.

(22 oz. bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maryland/baltim target=blank>Wells Discount Liquors) Sweet and malty...Pours cloudy dark reddish brown with two fingers of persistent biege head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, maybe a hint of peat or smoke. Mouthfeel medium-heavy, lightly prickly, fairly sticky/syrupy. Sturdy rings of lacing. Flavor is caramel and toffee malty sweetness with hints of peat, smoke and Scotch whisky. Pretty tasty and well-made.

22oz bottle-pours a thin retaining tan head and mahogany color. Aroma is medium malt-sweet caramel, woody/resiny/herbal. Taste is roasty, dark/medium malt-molasses, secondary spicy/earthy hops. OK carbonation.

This scotch ale pours a medium brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is brown sugar, molasses and maple. A medium bodied Scottish Ale. Malts are caramel, maple sugar, and toast. Hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Smooth taste. Just a hint of smoke. Nice beer. I really like this breweries “World Tour” beers. Wish I could get them on the West Coast. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
