Commercial Description:
Next Stop: Scotland.... Otter Kilter, A Scottish-Style Wee Heavy. Otter Kilter, Otter Creek's sixth stop on the "OTTER CREEK WORLD TOUR", is a style modeled after the Scotch Wee Heavy ales. Wee Heavy is a traditional Scotch ale. The rich, malty character can be attributed to the native strain of barley known as Golden Promise. This barley is prized by both ale brewers and Scotch whiskey distillers. And it's not hard to see why once you've tried it. Wee Heavy ales feature a rich caramel flavor that is achieved by boiling the wort in the brew kettle for an extra long time. Hops only grow in the southern part of Britain in England, home of the "Sassenachs" the ancient enemy of the Scots. Needless to say hops are used sparingly in Scotch ales. As they say in Scotland, Slainte!

Pours a two finger very light tan head that fades slowly, leaving a good lace. Nice clear, deep amber color. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Caramel nose. Flavor is caramel and alcohol which is unusual with the low ABV but a decent scotch ale. 22oz bottle part of 3-pack $12.99 from Manchester Wine and Liquors Manchester, CT

This scotch ale pours a medium brown color from a 22oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is brown sugar, molasses and maple. A medium bodied Scottish Ale. Malts are caramel, maple sugar, and toast. Hops are earthy and floral. Nice balance. Smooth taste. Just a hint of smoke. Nice beer. I really like this breweries “World Tour” beers. Wish I could get them on the West Coast. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Yup liked it. Very lovely beer. Has a nice toffee candy touch to it but is not very sweet. A bit of complexity from this guy. Very red ale, super light flavors of cream, some citrus hoppies, and sweet maltyness with a medium body. Very good.

Courtesy of DragonStout. Pours clear brown with tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, mild molasses, chocolate malts, earthiness and peat. Could have a bigger aroma. The flavor is fruity dates, caramel, prunes, earthiness and some mild peat just like in the aroma. It ends smooth and mildly roasty with a faint lingering peatiness.

nice sweet malt aroma, the body is velvety, and the finish seems to have more of the wee heavy personality.

22 oz - Deep orangey crimson, light tan creamy head. Nice toasty caramel nose that belnds with cherry and toffee-like notes. Soft smoke, chocolate, and doughy tones emerge on further warming. Malty toasty caramel flavors dominate, but continued faint smoke, boozy cherry (7.5%) and toffee notes still play a role throughout. Does get a light hop bitterness late to pull this all together, but this is more a malt show then anything else. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, toasted malt finish. A nicely done effort to show the style...

The aroma was malty, nutty and toasty with a strong presence of caramel. As the beer warmed and the head fell a strong biscuity nature emerged. Clear amber brown with a wispy low head that retained just enough to try to lace the glass. The flavor was malty and toasty with more of the biscuity character. Caramel malt was slightly sweet at first on the palate but immediately lessened with a hint of smokiness and caramelization. Nothing over the top in terms of flavor but a solid showing. The body was darn near full and with a fairly low carbonation level that just barely prickled on the palate. The caramel, biscuit and toast lasted into the aftertaste when a light bit of bittering emerged. A nicely conceived Wee Heavy. 22 ounce twist off bottle.

A very nice beer with complex flavor - low bitterness and nice aroma - My favorite Otter Creek to date.
