2008 Flour city Brewfest. Black brew with small brown head. Some sweet chocolate and caramel malts made this very enjoyable.

Dark brown, thin head, bit of ace. moderatley roasty, some chocolate, sweet molasses, rummy nose. Lighter bodied stout but some creaminess, flavors much like the aroma, I like the flavor the sugar cane provides, does give it some cocunut rum taste. Not bad.

22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown almost black with a medium creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, moderate sweetness, dark fruits, and a hint of herbal hops. The flavor is more roasted malt, light coffee, semi sweet, chocolate. and dark fruits. All of this has some earthy qualities as well. Medium bodied and easy to drink.

The aroma is somewhat (it’s a tricky beer to get your nose around) burnt brown sugar, coffee and chocolate, but has a hard to describe sharpness. It’s not tart or tangy or metallic, but there is a sharpness that reminds me of the smell of blood if it were mixed liberally into brown sugar. Not a pretty image and an odd, but not bad smelling beer. The body is full on black and holds an attractive thumb thick mocha head that diminishes slowly. Burnt licorice, charred wood, black coffee, dark chocolate, treacle, dark fruit, some veggie notes. Overall it is very dry and not sweet enough for the Foreign Stout moniker, but it is actually very approachable and has a sort of muted-bitter-roasty-flannel wearing-manly sort of flavor that can most easily be described as, satisfaction. It’s sort of greater than the sum of its parts and is quite enjoyable as a whole even if nothing in particular wows me.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color, with faint red highlights. Creamy, mocha-like hazel-tan colored head. Prominent wet lacing. Coffee aroma, caramel, chocolate, roasted bitter malts, and a nice cocoa powder touch. Flavor is nice: roasted coffee notes first and foremost, chocolate, cocoa, sweet hops in the end. Dry, bitter finish. Quite drinkable even on a warm day. Pleasantly surprised with this one.

Bottle. Pours almost black with a fizzy tan head. Aroma is roasted and sweet, with brown sugar for sure. Medium body. Flavor is a little boozy, also roasted, sweet chocolate, and brown sugar notes. Not bad.

Dark black body with a medium creamy tan head. Roasty, creamy aroma with some light chocolate. Sweet chocolate and caramel flavor with light roastiness. Medium full body with moderate carbonation and a very smooth creamy finish.
