Commercial Description:
This time the Otter is going to Germany, with "Otterbahn," a weizenbock, set for May release. "Otterbahn" is a unique combination of a hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer), and a bock (robust malty ale). The wheat adds a citrus like flavor and light body, the unique yeast strain produces clove like character and banana esters. The addition of toasted malts adds even more complexity to this already full-flavored style. As they say in Germany- prosit!

Bottle. Very dark brown body with a half-inch head. Nose-woody, grapey, vinegar. Taste-sour, vinegar, papery, cidery, choclate, dusty, possible oxidation but it is hard to tell with all of the vinous notes, dry, light funk/barn yard. Not very good as a weizen bock, but damn interesting as a geuze or Flemish sour…Gets points for style for the little Otter on the label wearing lederhosen.

05.11.06 Bomber. Deep cola brown with tan head quickly fading to a ring. Aroma is initially more roast and chocolate than expected, reminding mostly of a porter. Fruitiness only emerges on nose as temps approach 60 degrees and blossom somewhat as temps increase, although stifled somewhat behind a veil of booziness (that is not unpleasant or unwarranted). Palate is medium-thin with tingly eff, lingering tartness, and lacking any unctuosity or coating malts. Some mineral and vegetal flavors emerge with temp, overtaking what had been some nice (though out of place?) roastiness and mellow, dry, charcoal notes. Wheat and the phenolic yeastiness really comes through near the finish and with temp, but there is a lack of the richness one expects with a big weizenbock. An interesting effort, but nothing worth buying again. Soemtimes I wonder if medium-sized micros like Otter Creek just whip up unusual styles so they’ll have something to put in a bomber and label ’special edition’ more for marketing than for adventurous brewing. Oh well.

(Rating #716)

Biscuity malts, tart wheat, banana, raisins, plums and light spices in the aroma. Opaque, muddy brown body is topped by a low off white head that recedes rapidly to ring. Salty and somewhat vegetal flavour does not really display any of the promise of the aroma. Some light fruitiness and nutty malt notes and perhaps a touch of citrus meander across the tongue. Medium body with moderate carbonation is marred by aqueous texture. Bottle sampled at the post-Mondial 2006 tasting.

nice bownish pour but it ended there for me. I want a more bodied Wheat Bock then this showed it had hints of spice and everything nice but fell short in my book

Bottle. pours a thin mahogany brown. Nose is of sweet roasted malts. Taste is also very roasted and sweet. Slight hop presence. Rich finish. I like this a lot, but it is a touch too sweet.

Otterbahn has elevated yeasties, combined with chocolate and roasted malts. Thin head, dark brown medium body and a chocolate banana flavor. This three buck Weizen Bock was an excellent purchase.
